Mike Mania Double Lung Transplant

Donation protected
Michael's Story begins back in 1991 when he was diagnosed with sarcoidosis. The disease stayed dormant for many years up until August 27, 2004 when he went in for intestinal surgery that didn't go well. On September 1, 2004 he went in for a second surgery due to a leak at the site they repaired his diseased colon. This caused him to go septic and he developed ARDS (an acute respiratory disorder) which stiffens the lungs that most people don't survive and his sarcoidosis flared up and he ended up on a ventilator with five chest tubes, was put into a drug induced coma and we almost lost him a few times during his 4 1/2 month stay in the hospital. He did also have to get a tracheotomy as well which he had from the end of September, 2004 until March of 2005. He managed for quite a few years after all this, but his lungs started to deteriorate rapidly starting around January 2012. We would be back and forth to his pulmonary doctor many times with many tests only for one day in July of 2012 her finally telling Mike that he should see the transplant team. We made the appointment shortly after that for a consultation and they had him go for three days of testing in August of 2012. This lead to him being closer to the team approving him for a double lung transplant, the one main thing was that he had to have the infected mesh he had in his abdomen from hernias caused by all the surgeries he has had removed. He had this done in January 2013 and he was then listed March 28,2013.....
