My Talented Niece, Alison Bowker, wants to be a doctor!
And, why not? Her mom has suffered her whole life with Polycystic Kidney Disease (and is currently on dialysis waiting for a transplant); and her dad, a diabetic, just received a kidney transplant. She wants to learn how she can help other people not suffer as much as she has seen her family suffer!
She has been homeschooled her entire life and has developed an interest in medicine.
She is sixteen years old and has just secured her first job! She will be saving all of her earnings to help fund her trip, but needs help from others. As you can imagine, her family is in no position to pay for the trip.
She has an opportunity to go to San Francisco this summer to experience first hand the hospital environment. She will have the opportunity to watch surgery being performed and also to participate in mock surgery. She will learn from doctors and medical students about thier experiences.
The trip will cost $2,000 and that includes travel, food and lodging and the experience at the hospital. Any extra money we raise will be put into savings for her college.
If you are a healthy adult, please consider living kidney donation. You probably know someone who will be needing a kidney sometime- it is a good decision. I made it and my sister is alive today because of it!
