Remembering Matthew Powell: 2012 Hartford Half Marathon
Donation protected
It's that time of year again. The new Asics have been purchased, the iPhones are is updated, and the miles are being logged. With a little more than a month until race day on October 13, 2012 training for our fifth half-marathon, the Hartford ING, is underway.
Emily and George are teaming up for the fourth year to raise money for the Matthew Powell Scholarship Fund. Powell graduated
from the University of Connecticut in 2008 with a degree in exercise
science. A proud brother of the chi phi fraternity, there was nothing
that he wouldn't do for his friends and brothers.
Matt's tragic passing is a constant source of inspiration for us. A reminder that life is too short and that we must cherish every minute and everyone in it.
And even though we miss Matt everyday ... he will always live on in our hearts as we remember him and what an amazing person he was.
Emily:
Powell passed away two days before my first half marathon in 2008. I made one of the most difficult decisions of my life "“ driving away from the funeral home in Westbury, NY and my friends, to go home and get some rest before the race that I had been working toward for over a year. Every time I want to give up, I still to this day think of how much Matthew motivated me during my first race through the streets of Hartford on that sunny Sunday, and the indescribable feeling of success and tidal wave of emotion as I crossed the finish line.

Emily's courage to run and her drive to collect money for the scholarship was a big reason why I got into running. It's something I wanted to be a part of and my small way of helping and showing Matt how much he was loved. From there it's sparked a love/hate relationship with running. It can be so difficult at times, but so rewarding in the end. When I run the Hartford half, I can feel Matt's presence. Whether its a cool breeze when I feel like I want to stop, or one of the bands playing his favorite song as I happen to run by. It's a special race at a special time of year for all of us that knew him.

Once again, We're looking forward to dedicating this race to him. Please join us in our efforts and help us reach our fundraising goal
of $1,000 to donate toward the scholarship set up in Powell's name at his
former high school, Carle Place High School in Carle Place, NY.
