Margarita Has Fallen

Donation protected
Margarita has fallen, and she can't get up without all our help! We are her extended family !

We were notified yesterday evening that Margarita fell and broke her femur.  She was operated on at the Presbyterian Hospital in Puerto Rico yesterday and will be there for at least several days.  Afterwards she will be moved to a rehabilitation center for an unknown length of time.

As we all know a hip/femur fracture at Margarita’s age (93) is very serious.  Margarita communicated to us that she had not been walking very much, as her balance had been poor.  Now that she has broken her femur, it is unknown what level of mobility she will be able to achieve after recovery.  Her recovery is likely to be long and painful, based on what I know about hip/femur fractures in the elderly.

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico - Margarita's story of how she was able to leave her independent-living facility in San Juan, PR - which had no electricity or running water - for Florida became national news.

In addition to the status report, I am letting everyone know that Margarita will need some financial help once she leaves the rehabilitation center.  She has been living in government-subsidized housing in Miramar for about the past 10 years, but that is an independent living facility.  If she is unable to live there independently, she will have to move.  Friends can probably provide day-time assistance to Margarita for a while once she returns to her home after leaving the rehabilitation center.  However, until Margarita can function on her own, she will also need night-time assistance.  The cost in the neighborhood of $100 per night.

I am asking everyone to reflect a bit on how difficult this situation will be for Margarita.  Albeit distant, we are the only family she has.  If we can all contribute even a little bit, then the burden will not be great for any one person.  If the situation were reversed and we were in Margarita’s shoes, we would surely be thankful and grateful to not be abandoned by our family.   I know that no one enjoys being asked to donate money.  We all have expenses, our children who may need help, and potentially our own medical issues.

Please think about it and do what you can.
