Mary Katharine's Cancer Odyssey

Mary Katharine is a beautiful soul and dear friend of mine who needs some help right now.
Mary Katharine has worked at the Community Social Planning Council for over 10 years towards the goal of ending poverty in our community. Now she faces complete poverty through no actions of her own.
She has been a caregiver for friends and other loved ones in the past, and now it’s her turn to receive some help.
Last year she had a kiwi-sized tumour removed from behind her right eye. She went through radiation treatment last year, but it didn’t quite do the trick. She now has a new diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, a more serious cancer related to Leukemia and Lymphoma. She is now on chemotherapy and must go and stay in Vancouver for a few weeks or more this winter for a stem-cell transplant. And while she is grateful to be a Canadian with our healthcare system, it doesn’t cover all the extra expenses, such as travel, and meals and accommodation in Vancouver for herself and a caregiver.
Here’s what she told me:
“I am so very grateful that I live in Canada and most of the heavy medical costs are covered. But, I haven't worked in a year-and-a-half and there are many non-medical cancer-related expenses along the way. Expenses that are hard to meet living on disability insurance.
The first bout of cancer wiped me out financially and this stay in Vancouver is beyond what little credit I have left.”
Mary Katharine has sold most of her items of value, her savings are gone, and the costs keep coming and are adding up quickly.This would be overwhelming in good times, never mind when you are fighting for your life.
We friends have asked her to create a Gofundme page for over a year. She is stubborn and independent, but now has finally agreed to accept this help.
