"MEETING THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF ADOPTIVE CHILDREN"
In the course of our twenty-two years of marriage, my husband Dan and I have adopted five children from four different families. In September of 2016, two of our children were dismissed from their perspective schools in the same week.  Each one was encouraged to find a school that was “a better fit.”  Our daughter was referred to a wonderful school with a holistic approach for children with learning disabilities. The problem is that the tuition wasn’t so wonderful.

Our story is not unique. Over the years, we have spoken with scores of adoptive families and many of us have a similar scenario: children with extraordinary educational needs and a lack of funds to adequately meet those needs. Many educational needs first present themselves as misbehavior or defiance. But further research and testing often reveals that these “behaviors” often have their root in learning styles, cognitive challenges or neurological deficits. Recent research indicates that one in four adopted children has a diagnosed disability, twice the rate of children being raised by both biological parents.  In our experience it has been five out of five.

Seeing my children’s educational needs as well as talking to other adoptive parents struggling to adequately educate their children inspired us to start The MENAC Foundation. MENAC stands for “Meeting the Educational Needs of Adopted Children.” Educational needs could be as simple as getting testing for dyslexia or tutoring in weak subjects to larger ticket items such as neurological testing or school tuition, but are not limited to these.

Our hope is that The MENAC Foundation will be a well-spring from which families can come to draw from to get the help they need. That many families would be able to get funding for testing or tutoring or putting their child in that “perfect program” that meets the childs needs.

The Foundation is in its infancy and we are in need of funding. Some of these needs include establishing a bank account, securing a domain name and building a web site. We are attempting to raise $10,000 for these start-up costs, as well as meeting one of our first requests for financial aid.

Would you consider giving towards this great cause? And would you let others know about it, as well? MENAC foundation is a non-profit organization and all gifts are tax deductible. We appreciate your time and consideration.
