OK.............June 19 Donna's world changed forever!!!
Her sweet, smart, strong, handsome son Lucas was diagnosed with cancer...Burkitt Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma!
That was a Monday! They have been at UC Davis Medical Center since June 22nd. This is a strong fast growing cancer but can be treated with great results!
Lucas is a 21-year-old young man who is smart and strong. He has been going to Butte College studying towards a career path as an actuary. He has big plans to study at UC Santa Cruz, but this minor setback will keep him home a little longer. He's never been sick a day in his life. That is why this is such a shock to the family that he would acquire such a rare form of cancer that is predominant in Africa. It's a shock to everyone.
Lucas will undergo six (6) months of chemotherapy treatments. His first treatment began June 30th. He will be in a cycle of 7 days at the hospital for chemotherapy and then home for 14 days. This will continue for the six month period. In those days at home, he will have to go for blood draws twice a week, monitor his temperature every 4 hours, someone will have to be with him around the clock.
While at home the family will have the extra expenses of purchasing a hospital bed, bringing in a professional cleaner to make sure the home is sanitary for Lucas' stays. Any contact with germs can send him back into the hospital with the slightest fever. There are other expenses as well such as the gas to travel to UC Davis and parking at UC Davis is $12.00 per day alone. They will also need to purchase face masks, gloves, new sanitary bedding and much more.
These funds will help the family provide for the needs that are over and above what the insurance will cover. They will help Donna to be able to spend more time with Lucas and less time worrying about money. Although while other family members take turns at home and the hospital, Donna will be able to keep her part-time job.
