Linda's Battle Against Cancer

Donation protected
Friends and Family of Linda Lumley are asking for prayers and support during a very difficult time.  My mom's unfortuante journey started over a year ago when she was experiencing pain in her leg and noticed that it was swollen.  She went to the doctor and was told that it was just a torn muscle and it would heal by itself. After a while of not healing, she decided to go to the ER - and found out that she had a blood clot in her leg.  So she went on Warfarin and waiting for the swelling to go down and the blood clot to dissolve.  Well after more time of not healing, pain getting worse and losing sensation in her foot - she knew that something was not right and tried to get reasoning to why her leg was not getting better.  She went to over 5 different doctors, each giving her different diagnosis but telling her that it would heal on its own time, and that she had nothing to worry about.  Well finally she went to one Orthopedic doctor that looked at her leg and decided to actually investigate and see what was wrong.  After going for multiple tests and procedures, we came to find out that the swelling in her leg was actually a cancerous tumor.  Linda was diagnosed with a rare cancer called "Synovial Sarcoma" - which is cancer of the soft tissue.

Linda started the process of seeing an Oncologist and trying to figure out what would be the best method to get rid of the cancer.  The doctor told her that the tumor was too big to just remove it (If it had been diagnosed over a year ago when she started having problems, the doctor said it would have been able to be removed).  But since it had taken so long until someone decided to investigate - she would have to have receive chemotherapy and have radiation on her leg in order to try and shrink the tumor so it can be removed. So Linda has been receiving radiation 5 days a week, and chemo on and off since the beginning of August.

This past Thursday (9/11/14) Linda went to radiation and got her blood work done, and was hospitalized due to low potassium levels. On Saturday, when she was going to be discharged home, Linda fell on the floor, and ended up breaking her femur in the same leg with the tumor.  My mom is currently at Smilow hospital in New Haven,  awaiting information from her doctors on how to proceed.  She is in extreme pain and unable to move. She also needs to be very careful not to get an infection because her blood counts are incredibly low and her body just can't fight anything off right now.

Of course we are asking friends, family and the community for positive thoughts and to keep Linda in your prayers.  Linda has been out of work since all of this has happened. We don't want Linda to worry about bills or money during this very difficult time, so any donation - small or large would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE (9/17/14)
- Just wanted to let everyone know that tomorrow (Thursday) Mom is going to get her bad leg amputated from above the knee. The fracture from the fall ended up being right by the tumor - because the tumor is basically eating away at the bone so the bone was very fragile to begin with. So, as you may guess - mom is obviously going to be in the hospital longer than expected. She is also going to need to have physical therapy after she recovers from the surgery.  They are also looking into getting a prosthetic leg. Mom has been very strong through out the whole process. Although this is a terribly difficult time, She usually tries to keep a smile on her face and the nurses and health care team laughing.  If any of you know mom, you know how strong and independent she is.  She is a single mom (and a wonderful one at that) and she always took care of me and made sure my needs were met, and on top of that she also takes care of my grandma. But now mom is the one who is going to need support and to be taken care of. Not only is she going to need extra help with managing her new disposition, but we are also going to need help to accomodate her new needs with the house and getting around. So again, help and support is needed now more than it ever has been. I want to thank everyone who has already donated.  Not only do I appreciate it very much, but so does mom!

Thank you! <3
