My name is Mary Phelan and in March of 2014, my senior year at Ohio State University, I was brutally attacked. I was robbed, beaten unconcious, left in a drivewave covered in blood with a fractured face, fractured jaw, knocked out front tooth, a sever concussion, and brain damage. After two days in the hospital I returned home.
In addition to the healing process, I was doing what I could to help the detective working my case. Thankfully he was able to make an arrest off DNA and put my attacker is in jail. It's still unclear if there will be a formal trial.
Following the attack I developed post-concussion syndrome. This made even simple tasks, like walking difficult. It basically feels like you have a ful on concussion all the time. I still haven't been released to go back to work or even to drive. I have been going to speech therapy, physical therapy, and light therapy. During physical therapy the extent of my brain injury was discovered. My auditory, visual, and vestibular systems have become tangled and are not functioning correctly.
My expenses have only increased since the attack but throughout this process I have tried to remain upbeat. It has been and still is a long recovery process but I am thankful for the progress that I have made. I am pleased that I can look at the computure screen long enough to type this. The fact that I can read at all is an improvement from when I first got back home.
I am hopeful light therapy will be helpful and allow me to finish my physical therapy. Then hopefully my life can start to get back to normal, or a new normal at least. This experience has been life changing and I hope that it will allow me to help others who have been in a similar situation.
