Let's Do Lunch for 880 Samburu children next year.
I often think about amazing, super talented friends, near and far, new and those made long ago.
"I wish we could meet for a long lunch - swap crazy stories, laugh, talk about loves and losses and plans for the future".
While I hope I see you for lunch this year, let's do something really crazy - let's buy lunch for one child for a whole year.
$40 buys lunch for a child every day for a year.
The community elders asked for this program - they know that school attendance drops when families struggle to feed their children.
A daily school meal provides a strong incentive to send children to school, keep them there and allows children to focus on their studies.
School lunch programs also reduce gender inequality by providing access to girls who might not normally be able to attend school.
I lived and worked in Samburu for several years, holding mobile medical clinics for women and children far from any permanent services. The community is deeply committed to educating their children.
I am partnering with sustainability officers at Sasaab (Safari Collection) and Kenya Wildlife Trust to administer the program.
We will provide one school meal per student per school day, which will consist of:
· Maize flour (Ugali) the Kenyan staple food
· Beans or maize
· Oil fortified with Vitamins A and D
Ideally, we would buy the food from the local market but it is not available at a cost-effective price. Therefore we buy the food directly from farm suppliers in Nairobi in bulk at discounted prices and then it is transported to Samburu where it is stored safely.
We will provide biannual reports on the program, detailing the number of children participating and the changes in performance and enrolment as a result. We will also provide photo packs and videos to assist with social media reporting.
