Luntu Masiza

My name is Luntu MaizaI am a South African actor born on the 30th July 1991 in Pietermaritzburg but located to England at the age of ten. It was during year 10 at George Dixon School that I first discovered my passion for the arts and I went on to obtained my first Diploma in Performing Arts. Thereafter, I went on to enrolled at Dudley College and studied a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts Drama. 

in 2014 I made the decision to come back to South Africa to further my studies.  A charity from the UK offered to pay for my studies at AFDA (The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance) where I completed my degree at the end of 2017 in Bachelor of Arts in Live Performance. I was awarded with two awards at the end of my course for Best Male Performance on a stage production and Best Male Performance in a television production. I won a for a Fleur Du Cup for Best Promising Student in the Western Cape (South Africa).

While was in the UK  I got involved in training programs such as the Director`s course at the Young Vic Theatre, The Soho theatre Writers Lab and a broadcast magazine training programme run by BBC and Mamma Youth where I was a cameraman for the “What`s Up show”. In 2015, I wrote "After Freedom", which was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland in August 2015. I also had the opportunity to showcase two of my 15 minutes plays, Status 319 and Ubudoda that were performed in the West End, London. Ubudoda, was redeveloped in South Africa as a full  length play and featured  in Baxter’s Theatre Zabalaza Festival 2016.

Early this year I performed in Czech Republic at the Setkani/Encounter festival and I came across RADA students and I got a chance to watch their work and speak to them about the course  about their experiences and I was riveted by the progress in their craft. What really caught my attention with watching the work of the students from RADA was the ensemble work they do in order to communicate their story through the medium.

 I believe the MA course would help me find my voice further as a storyteller which is empowering as a young, black performer. I strongly believe in developing communities and given the opportunity to go RADA to study with people from around the world I can come back to empower young people in South Africa and share with them skills I would have mastered in order to contribute to the advancement of our craft locally. I fully believe that with the assistance required I can achieve mammoth success through this endeavor and am imploring you to assist me in making this a reality.
