C'ville Students' NYC Dream

Donation protected
Lugo-McGinness High School (LMA) is a small alternative school in Charlottesville, Virginia. We implement a trauma-informed approach to educating the whole student. Our population is mainly comprised of at-risk, under-resourced youth. The majority of students live within a stone's throw of where the alt-right and white supremacist groups invaded our idyllic town spewing violence and hate. Following the horrific events over the weekend of August 12th our small staff met and started to discuss how to begin to heal and re-establish a safe environment for our students. A large part of healing for these students is being able to see themselves in positive representations and having the positive contributions of African Americans throughout our history reinforced and celebrated.

To this end, we have dreamed BIG for our students. We would like to provide them a field trip beginning with a visit to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. We plan to end the day in NYC to watch a performance of "Hamilton ," renowned for its multi-cultural cast and appealing to a non-traditional Broadway audience.

A large majority of our students have no opportunites to travel outside of their city, to experience museums that educate about their heritage, and certainly not to see a Broadway show that celebrates our country's cultural diversity.

We, at Lugo-McGinness Academy, want to empower our students and instill a feeling of pride in themselves that the events of August 12th sought to destroy.  By offering our students a different perspective on race and culture, we hope to promote discussions about inequality, to impress upon them the importance of being active citizens in order to combat injustice, and to provide them experiences that allow them to see possibilites beyond the community.

We need to fundraise a substanial amount of money in order to make this somewhat crazy dream become a reality for our students. I have outlined a budget that includes food, transportation, tickets, lodging and, of course, snacks. Our goal is to leave on a Friday morning, spend the day in DC, travel to NYC for the night. Saturday morning, we would explore New York City (Central Park and Harlem, weather permitting) then attend a Saturday Matinee showing of Hamilton.

Charter Bus from Charlottesville to Washington DC $800-1000

Museum entrance: Free! Woohoo

Lunch in Washington DC: $250 ($15 per person)

Train from Washington DC to New York City: $100 per person so $2000

Dinner in NYC: $20 per person = $400

Hotel in NYC on a Friday Night, 7 rooms for 20 people= $2100

Breakfast included in hotel fee

Pizza Lunch in NYC $10 per person = $200

Tickets to see Hamilton = $8000 to $10,000

Dinner in New York = $20 per person, so $400

Tranportation back to Charlottesville from NYC (plane or charter bus)= $2000 to $2500

Total Budget = $18,000

This budget is for 20 people, but if we raise more money then we will be able to bring additional students, which would be unbelievable.

Please consider contributing to making this dream a reality for our very deserving and awesome kids!
