Peter and I have decided that our third ever marathon (we are trying to erase the memories of our poor Gold Coast performance) will be on behalf of charity - we will be entering the marathon event at Australian Running Festival in Canberra on Sunday 12th April this year.
Barnardos Australia is one of the leading child protection charities in Australia. We will be running as Gold Charity Entrants – you can look for us at the start line.
Barnardos Australia builds relationships between children, young people, their families and the community. They advocate for children and young people and contribute to community knowledge about their issue.

However, raising money for Barnardos is not our only mission.
Some of you would be aware that one of my nephews is a special needs child (actually, teenager). Sam has multiple limitations – he has the mental development age of a 3 year old, the physical strength on the 14 year old that he is, and the height of a 9-10 year old – he also suffers from epilepsy and unfortunately makes a couple of emergency visits to E.D each year due to his seizures.
Our fundraising goal is to raise $1,500 each for Barnardos ($3,000) with anything above that to be split between Barnardos and Sam so he may also benefit from our Marathon efforts.
Funds we raise for Sam will go towards providing some financial relief to my sister Fatima, his single-Mum, with a focus a on repair bills. Due to his physical strength, Sam damages furniture and electronic gaming consoles etc quite often and keeping up with replacement costs can be a challenge for my sister who is a single mother (p.s she works at Coles in Macquarie in the Deli section – if you see a lady with short black hair there, it could be her – say hi to her).
His limited language skills means that it always important to give him an outlet through games, he responds well to hand-held devices and can spend hours happily playing all sorts of games – when he was younger, he could get lost into a game of solitaire.
It goes without saying that your contribution and support is sincerely and kindly appreciated.
P.S we will cover our own travel and accommodation costs, please be assured that all funds raised will go to either Barnardos or Sam.
