The Accident:
My brother’s life changed forever on Saturday, June 9, 2018 when he fell 3 stories from a balcony and crushed his spine – leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. He has spent the last seven weeks in the ICU fighting for his life. Though his condition is now stable, this is just the beginning of a very long journey to a new normal for both my brother and my family. Today, I ask for your help.
Before his accident, my brother, Karl, was an avid cyclist who also loved to play hockey, exercise, travel, attend concerts, and was a successful writer. Now, as a paraplegic, Karl will have to undergo intensive rehabilitation just to relearn basic skills like how to sit up and dress himself. Karl still requires a tracheotomy to breath, but my family hopes that as he gets stronger he will be able to breath on his own again.
The Cost of Re-Learning to Live
The average first-year cost of a paraplegic injury is $518,904. Subsequent year costs are estimated to be nearly $100,000 per year. Unfortunately, insurance isn’t enough. Despite this life-threatening injury, insurance offers just 28 days of rehabilitation. Karl has already reached day 21 and is in no way ready to leave intensive rehab care.
