Joy Moja: Education in Tanzania

Donation protected
Joy Moja started as a vision after I returned from an amazing five months of studying abroad in Tanzania.  The counry is developing, and its future lies in the hands of its children.  Although primary education (the US equivalent of 8th grade) is compulsory and free, families must pay for their children's books, supplies, uniforms, and test fees.  Unfortunately, enrollment in secondary education (the US equivalent of high school) is low since families have to pay tuition in addition to these expenses.  Many of the schools are in desperate need of books, supplies, desks, repairs, blackboards, and many other things that facilitate a productive learning environment.

I returned to the US hopeful that I could find a way to give kids in Tanzania an opportunity to continue their education.  Meanwhile, people constantly complimented the beaded sandals, khangas, handmade suits and dresses, jewelry, and Tinga Tinga paintings that I got from the markets in Tanzania.

Enter Joy Moja... an organization that sells beautiful creations by Tanzanian artisans to sponsor various projects aimed at providing greater educational opportunities to Tanzanian children.  Its purpose is to become a self-sustaining charity that is primarily funded by the retail portion of the organization in order to fund various projects benefiting needy children.

With the help of countless people who supported this idea, I launched this vision after returning to Tanzania in 2014.  We established business relationships with Tanzanian market women and artisans and imported a small inventory of hand beaded sandals, jewelry, paintings, colorful fabrics, handbags, and various other items. We visited schools that are in dire need of assistance and donated books and supplies.  We also launched a website (

www.joymoja.com

), formed a board of directors, and submitted our 501(c)(3) application for tax-exempt status!

This year we are returning to Tanzania to connect with schools in different areas and working on a few projects at the schools we visited last year.

We need all the financial help we can get to pay for Joy Moja's continuing start-up and operating expenses, the upcoming trip, build inventory, send donated books to Tanzania, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, fund some of the needs of the schools that we visited last year (building book shelves, desks, restrooms, or any other needs that we discover during our visit this year).  We also hope to offer scholarships to a few of the students we meet.

Your donation will be tax deductible pending the approval of our 501(c)(3) application.

Thank you for the support!
