Jose "Luis" Piedad Arellano Cazarez left our earth peacefully and surrounded by family on September 29, 2018.
He was an active 88.5 year old whose health was phenomenal, up until a few months ago. It started with pain in his legs, which his doctor figured was arthritis. The pain became worse and worse, until one day he woke up unable to walk. He was taken to the hospital, where they discovered myeloma (cancer in the blood) so they began treatment and had him receiving physical and occupational therapy at the facility next door.
After three weeks, the facility sent him home despite the fact that he was not in good condition. He was home for one day until the pain became unbearable and he could not walk. He went back to the hospital, where they discovered a tumor near his tailbone area. They decided to operate, followed by being sent to another facility for more physical therapy as he recovered. Two weeks went by and he was sent home again. All seemed well the first evening he was back, but by the morning he was weak and fell. The doctors decided he needed to be sent to another facility for more therapy. It was at the last facility that he awoke in the middle of the night to use the restroom, and took a fall. He was rushed to hospital where he received stitches on his forehead.
While receiving treatment for this injury, the nurses noticed he was having trouble swallowing and eating. Jose had developed dysphagia. The bone spurs grew large enough to hit certain nerves that affected his swallowing and speech. They performed a swallowing test, which he was unable to pass. His only option was a feeding tube, which he refused. He did not want to be resuscitated, did not wish for life support, and did not want to have a tube in his stomach. He knew his last days were approaching, so he made sure to voice his wishes: for his ashes to be placed in the same temple as his sister in Guadalajara, México.
Unfortunately, Jose did not make any prior arrangements and left no will. The family is left with numerous medical expenses and the high price of memorial services. Many have asked our grandmother (Jose’s wife) if there is a way they can help contribute, which led us to creating this page. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
