"I am, because we are" Research Abroad

As an ancient African Proverb states, "I am because we are." Though the path to obtaining my graduate degree was truly a challenge, it was also a testament of the faith that my support team had in me. I am truly blessed not to have made this journey alone and am grateful to each and every person who encouraged me to stay motivated along the way. As a result of countless hours spent conducting research, my doctoral project was accepted for presentation at an international conference in Shanghai, China. In addition I was also invited to participate in a research project in Zambia, Africa.

I am overwhelmed with excitement to have the opportunity to share the skills and knowledge I have obtained with other academicians around the world. However, I am currently transitioning between "poor student" status and "future professional." I have only been awarded a partial travel award for my trip to China. Though this was a huge blessing (individuals from the US are not usually given this scholarship), the cost of the trip is still too high for me to fund on my own. This truth also holds for travel to Africa. I am eager to journey to China and especially eager to make my first voyage to Africa engage in mutually beneficial exchanges and to visit the land of my ancestors "“ this would be a lifelong dream come true.

During this unique post-graduation time, I am working with my advisor to write publications and awaiting responses from jobs and/or post-doctoral fellowships. Unfortunately, I have not established a foundation to support myself for traveling opportunities such as these. It is for these reasons that I humbly request sponsorship to assist with my travels to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. I have enclosed a spreadsheet of my expenses. Any assistance you are able to give to propel me, as an early career scholar will be forever appreciated.
