Hello. My name is Jono David. I'm passionate about documenting the Jewish world in photographs.
I NEED YOUR SUPPORT to bring Holocaust & Genocide Memory in Africa: A Photographic Exhbitibion to all three of South Africa's Holocaust Centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban in 2018 (that's right, 3 exhibitions for the price of 1). Your donation goes directly to production and setup costs of each exhibition, plus publicity, transport/shipping, insurance, and security.
IN 2010, I DREAMED OF PHOTOGRAPHING JEWISH AFRICA. I slept on the idea for a while. In 2011, I started reading, researching, and reaching out to contacts. Between August 2012 and April 2016, I traveled to Africa 8 times over 60 weeks with stops in 30 countries and territories. I archived some 60,000 images. Holocaust & Genocide Memory in Africa is a photographic exhibition featuring but 44 of these photos including images from South Africa, Senegal, Namibia, Rwanda, Mauritius, Morocco and more.
THIS SHOW ALSO TIES IN emerging Jewish African communities in locations such as Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria, as well as a story line featuring older and dwindling Jewish communities in Zimbabwe, Tunisia, and Cape Verde. Additionally, the exhibition features video commentaries from researchers and Holocaust survivors. I also share bits of my Jewish Africa story in supportive anecdotes for selected images.
IN CONJUNCTION WITH the South African Holocaust & Genocide Foundation (SAHGF), I have a unique opportunity to share the story of Holocaust & Genocide Memory in Africa at the SAHGF's three Centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban.
