Lone Star Pet Lodges has become a safe place of refuge for many of Houston’s pets during Hurricane Harvey. Sitting on the edge of a mandatory evacuation area in Missouri City, Texas, Lone Star Pet Lodges never lost power and is at just the right elevation so they didn’t take on any water. Owners Walter and Lara Darr, along with their high school daughter Maggie, set up camp at Lone Star and booked some hotel rooms across the street, so they and a skeleton crew of Lone Star Pet Lodges staff could remain on hand. They’ve been working double shifts caring for pets of First Responders and those who have been displaced from their homes.
People locally and from all over the country have asked the Darr family how they can help, so Lone Star Pet Lodges has set up a GoFundMe Campaign called, Helping Lone Star’s People & Pets. Donations to the fund will help offset the cost of providing help to people and their pets in the Lone Star State who find themselves in need after the hurricane.
Lone Star Pet Lodges has offered FREE PET CARE & LODGING to the First Responders working through the Missouri City Emergency Operations Center and has extended the ongoing offer to Fort Bend County First Responders; all of whom have been working round the clock. Any additional funds collected will be donated to victims who have lost so much, and other deserving charities in the surrounding area who are helping victims of Hurricane Harvey.
Walter Darr reflected on the past few days by saying, “We have been blessed and so amazed by our co-workers’ response to those in need. Our team’s philosophy of, “Not closing our doors to anyone who needed a port in the storm” has tested the limitations of our team and each time they dug deep to find the “grit” to lean forward and keep welcoming in more soaking wet pets and pet parents. We even took in 27 dogs, 5 cats and 1 bird from a competitor boarding facility that was about to be swallowed up by the Brazos river. The facility owners came with the pets and have been working shoulder to shoulder with our group like one big happy family. It is amazing to see how natural disaster brings us together, blurs the lines of competition and everyone just leans forward and chips in to support one another.”
Lara Darr explained just one of the many stories she has from the past several days by saying, “We took in a mom, dad and a 4-day old puppy from a Missouri City Police First Responder who is working around the clock on storm duty and who had to evacuate his family from their home. Mind you, we wouldn't normally take a puppy this young but he had the Mom, Dad and baby at the local animal shelter and they called him and said the dogs had to be moved out. These definitely aren't normal times!”
Lara continued by saying, “We weren't sure the puppy was going to make it through the first couple nights but my 15-year old daughter Maggie stayed up with it and took on the responsibility for the care and feeding (every 2 hours) of the pup she has dubbed, "Storm," and we are happy to report that momma dog is fine and the puppy seems to be on the road to recovery.”
