Help Sparkle Heal

Donation protected

Early on the morning of March 20th, my granddaughter was holding 7-month old Sparkle, an adorable 6lb 8oz Pomeranian. In an instant, she jumped out of my granddaughter’s arms and broke her right front leg. That’s when our nightmare began.  An emergency visit to the local vet confirmed her injury and we learned that the repair required more than a simple cast.  The leg was splinted and we were referred to Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists (Columbia, MD) where we found out that this break would require surgery with a plate and pins in order to repair.

However, none of this comes without a cost.  The initial vet fees were high and the price of surgery was more than we ever expected.  My daughter has already paid for a portion of the costs out of pocket and has financed the rest at this point.  It is for this reason that I’ve created this page, in hopes of helping my daughter with some of the expenses to help Sparkle heal.

I’d like to offer a back story on who Sparkle (and her twin sister, Chloe) is and why they are such an important part of our lives. On Christmas Eve 2016, my granddaughters (now 8 & 9 years old) squealed with delight when they found out that Santa had truly listened to their Christmas Wish List and two adorable Pomeranian puppies were waiting for them after Santa’s visit. (videos included).

Santa must have understood the importance that these puppies would play in the lives of two little girls, as their father was killed after being struck by a car about 2 years ago.  Both girls have been in counseling and continue to see a therapist on a regular basis. Sometimes there are moments when they just don’t know how to express their feelings. In addition to becoming much loved pets, we hoped that each puppy would serve as a sort of “therapy dog” to help Amayah and Aaliyah cope with their loss.

Since that time, the girls have been dedicated to taking care of Sparkle and Chloe.  They wake up early each morning to take them outside, make sure they have food and water, and give them an abundance of love and attention.

Surgery is scheduled for Thursday, March 22nd and we’ve been told that it will be a very long healing process.  The positive is that Sparkle is still young and hasn’t finished growing, so we hope that her bone growth will continue and will aid in her healing.  The negative is that the follow-up care requires visits to the surgeon every 10 days for approximately 12 weeks to ensure the plate remains in place and the splint is appropriate for her size.  We’re told that the entire healing process could take up to one year.    The initial vet cost was $600 and the estimated cost of surgery is $4,000.  The surgery center is approximately 40 miles round-trip. We are expecting that we will have to make at least 10 trips for follow-up care.

My daughter is, now, a single mother of two little girls.  She is employed full-time but certainly isn’t rich.  She has been very responsible in all facets of pet ownership – ensuring that each puppy has had all vaccinations and preventative treatments.  Each puppy was spayed and micro-chipped one week ago (3/13/17). While handling all of the bills to appropriately care for each dog, she wasn’t prepared for the additional expenses resulting from this accident. I’m hoping that you will consider donating to help offset some of the financial burden she is facing.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story.  We greatly appreciate any help you can offer by way of donations, shares and/or prayers.
