Defying the Odds and Chasing my Dreams

My quest to become the best trainer and coach I could possibly be started in 2010. I have spent the last 3 summers of my life working for a training company called The Blitz. I have also coached at Sequoyah Youth Track Club for the past 3 seasons. It is a true blessing to wake up everyday and do something you love to do. Coaching and training athletes to do their absolute best in everything they do is a very rewarding job. It gives me an opportunity to step away from myself and focus on others. By doing that, it makes me a happier person because life is really all about helping others no matter what you do. Helping others achieve their goals gives me a very satisfying feeling in my soul.

I was awarded a football scholarship, academic scholarship, and Pell Grant to attend Reinhardt University in January of 2013. I was grateful and excited for the opportunity to expand my knowledge while playing the game I love. Unfortunately, things have not turned out the way I planned. Due to injuries, I have missed the entire season and have pain 24/7. Doctors have told me I have impingement syndrome, costochondritis (inflammation of rib cartilage) and myofascial pain. I have lost most of the strength in my right shoulder. It hurts just to take notes in class. After the cortisone shot did not give me any relief, the doctor said "well you do have a shoulder of a 60 year old." Of course like any other athlete or 24 year old male for that matter, I went through the depressed stage and was asking God why. Why would you give me a second chance to play college football then take it away before it happened? Why would you make training and working out miserable due to pain when it is my favorite hobby? I was even thinking about not being able to play catch with my kids. I was thinking "my shoulder is going to be 70 by then?! ?!" I have realized I was totally focused on my plans and not his since I went back to school to play football. One of my mum's prayer group friends that had me on her list had a strong urge from the Lord to call and tell me that I might be at Reinhardt to help other athletes instead of be an athlete. It was definitely not in my plans and it was not something I wanted to hear at the time. My plans have not worked out too well recently though. Attempting this fundraiser and trying to raise this money is absolutely ridiculous in my everyday normal way of thinking, but anyone can have faith when all is well, the true test of faith comes when nothing is well. An incredible speaker gave a character education lesson to the team today. The main point was that we are all capable of handling so much more physically, emotionally, and spiritually than we could ever imagine. He told us to trust God and strive for excellence.

I have been accepted to do a program with Naudi Aguilar and his company called Functional Patterns. My school has approved the program to count towards some of my internship credit hours. Naudi is a Holistic Movement Practitioner that uses as many means necessary, be it myofascial release, static stretching, Science based Massage Therapy, Corrective exercise, to bring a human body to its full functional potential. He is a Personal Trainer guru that also trains many MMA fighters. I will be learning the Functional Patterns methodology and become certified by the company. On top of that, he will be working 1 on 1 with me 5x a week to ensure that everything is wired into its most basic point. He will put his attention to correcting my individual imbalances, and mold me into a fully optimized human being from the inside out. The program will cover the exact limitations keeping my body from attaining functionality, as well as cover the elements to run a successful business in the field of health and fitness. Functional Patterns YouTube channel and website is my favorite place to get new exercises or information for the athletes that I train. I am always trying to share his videos with my boss, Rashid Gayle. In my opinion, Naudi is the best in the business when it comes to training the human body. Another fitness professional claimed "The way this guy works with his clients to help heal their bodies and turn them into world class athletes is nothing short of phenomenal, inspirational, and just a little bit radical."

I do not expect to turn into a world class athlete, but I definitely want to get out of pain, heal my body, and learn how to turn others into world class athletes. The truth is I do not have a clue what to expect if I was able to seize this opportunity of a lifetime. The certification will cost me $5,000. Another $5,000 will be needed to cover my airfare, lodging, food, and living expenses while spending 7 weeks in San Diego, California. The program starts on January 6th 2014. I need $2,500 to secure my spot in the program before it reaches full capacity. Naudi said the next candidate to pay the deposit will secure the spot. I am setting the goal to raise the total of $10,000 by December 27. It seems like an impossible task to me, but God will provide if it is meant to be. While sharing the opportunity with my professor, I was filled with a joy and excitement that I have not experienced since I was a little kid. She encouraged me to go for it since I felt so passionate about it. I am going for it.
Any donation, no matter how small or large will be greatly appreciated! Small donations add up in a big way.
