The Story Of My Twin
Between February 10th and 12th of 2012 Michael took a total of five 500 MG tablets of the antibiotic, Cipro. He was given the drug for a presumed minor infection which more than likely he never had. Hours after taking the 5th pill he began to suffer from an adverse reaction that caused extreme pain in both Achilles tendon's. Within days he went from being an athletic 30-year-old to being unable to walk.
His symptoms closely mirror what fibromyalgia sufferers experience. He is extremely sensitive to physical touch below the waist, as most tendons in his legs have been affected and even the lightest touch elicits extreme pain. It's been 15 months and Michael is still confined to a bed 20-21 hours a day due to his inability to sit or stand. A few months after the initial reaction he began suffering from upper hamstring tendinitis. This impairs his ability to sit and stay out of bed and it is not uncommon for this drug to continue to affect tendons months after the initial reaction.
This has placed a heavy financial burden on him as he needs about 30 hours of caregiving every week along with numerous other additional recurring costs that are not covered by medical insurance.
Despite everything that has happened, he has continued to persevere. Michael is slowly making progress with walking and standing. He is able to walk around the apartment half of the time without using an electric wheelchair and can stand for about five minutes. Ever since this has occurred he has needed the assistance of an electric wheelchair to get around the apartment where he lives with his girlfriend, Lisa. We are hoping if he continues to see improvement that he can finally return the electric wheelchair.
