QUI SUIS-JE?
Bonjour! Je m'appelle Guillaume Gégo, je suis un étudiant Belge fraichement revenu d'un échange de 10 mois au Canada (Ontario). J'aspire à devenir astronaute. Je suis en train de m'inscrire pour l'université de Mons pour une année, en attendant de lever assez de fonds afin d'étudier à l'étranger. Ceci pourrait ressembler à une requête audacieuse, et ça l'est. Mais de l'endroit d'où je viens, j'ai été élevé dans la croyance que si vous ne travaillez pas et vous ne vous efforcez pas d'atteindre vos objectifs, ils pourraient juste rester des buts et ne jamais prendre forme dans la réalité. Si je fais appel à vous aujourd'hui, ce n'est pas comme un adolescent, mais comme un étudiant dans le besoin. Je ne planifiais pas d'étudier au Canada du tout, parfaitement conscient des coûts pour l'université. Je ne suis allé en échange avec rien de plus que des rêves et l'espoir qu'un jour, par un travail acharné, je pourrais les transformer en plans concrets.
CE QUE J'AI FAIT
C'est pourquoi j'ai beaucoup travaillé sur un projet pour la foire de la science régionale de l'Ontario qui traite des façons de rendre l'environnement de Mars adéquat pour la croissance de plantes. Après une année de recherches, j'ai développé une simulation de l'environnement de Mars et j'ai essayé de simuler la croissance de blé. J'ai eu la chance de le présenter à l'Expo-sciences pancanadienne Mai 2019 (https://cwsf.youthscience.ca/) après que mon projet ait obtenu le Prix du Meilleur Projet Régional (Rideau Canal). En définitive, j'ai gagné un billet d'or pour participer au camp d'entraînement entrepreneurial à l'Université de York, et aussi obtenu des contacts avec des scientifiques de l'Agence spatiale canadienne qui seraient enclins à collaborer avec moi sur mon projet. J'ai pensé, après avoir examiné le programme Spatial d'ingénierie de York, que c'était ce que je voulais faire. Depuis ma plus tendre enfance, j'ai toujours rêvé de devenir un Astronaute et en grandissant, ce rêve n'a jamais disparu. Aujourd'hui, j'ai besoin de votre aide.
MES PLANS
En effet, au-delà du fait que s'inscrire en retard est un vrai défi, il y a l'aspect financier. Les frais s'élèvent au 40.000 $CAD par an, ce qui est bien hors de portée pour moi et ma famille. En janvier, ma mère a choisi de reprendre des formations pour se reconvertir et réaliser un de ses rêves. Je soutiens entièrement son choix et je serai toujours très fier d'elle... Cela dit, il est beaucoup trop tard pour s'inscrire à York cette année et je suis coincé entre deux continents.
Par contre, une autre occasion s'est récemment présentée à moi après que des scientifiques de l'Agence spatiale allemande aient entendu parler de mon projet. Ils semblaient être intéressés par ma participation au programme d'ingénierie spatiale à l'Université de Brême en Allemagne. Les frais sont moins élevés, mais toujours hors de portée... Ils s'élèvent à environ 15 000 euros (autour de 23 000 $CAD). Comme je ne peux pas travailler à l'étranger, j'ai besoin d'aide pour cela aussi.
Ma troisième et moins chère option serait d'étudier à l'Université de Mons en Belgique pendant une année tout en postulant pour des bourses pour essayer de faire un Erasmus à Brême ou à York en 2020. Les frais sont de 650 euros (980 $CAD) pour l'inscription et environ 6 800 euros (soit un total d'environ 10 000 $CAD) pour la résidence, les cours et les livres.
Ce sont les trois plans pour mes études et je travaillerai dur pour pouvoir suivre n'importe lequel de ces plans. Le problème est que les bourses couvrent à peine le coût de ces études. J'ai postulé pour la plupart d'entre elles, que ce soit en Belgique ou au Canada, en vain... Je ne peux pas imposer ces frais exorbitants à mes parents. Je ne suis pas le seul à débuter de hautes études; mon frère y a également droit !
UNE DEMANDE D'AIDE
Je suis enclin à travailler très dur et je suis prêt à faire tout ce qu'il faut pour me créer des occasions. Le programme spatial d'ingénierie de York, ainsi que les études des systèmes de survies biologiques offerts par l'Université de Brême et celle de Mons, sont exactement ce que je recherche. Je deviendrai astronaute, peu importe les obstacles auxquels je devrai faire face. Ce n'est plus mon rêve désormais, c'est mon plan !
J'ai juste besoin d'aide: des contacts, des bourses, des sponsors,... Qui sait ? Des philanthropes qui pourraient me parrainer. Ou des endroits où je pourrais travailler. Peut-être même des professeurs cherchant des étudiants pour les assister dans leurs recherches. Vraiment, n'importe quoi pourrait m'aider. Je sais que ceci peut sembler fou, mais je peux vous assurer que je fais de mon mieux pour tenter d'ouvrir des portes.

WHO AM I?
Hi! My name is Guillaume Gégo, I’m a Belgian student who just came back from a 10-month exchange in Canada (Ontario) and my plan is to become an Astronaut. I am currently applying at the University of Mons for a year, waiting to raise enough funds to go study abroad. This might seem like a bold inquiry, and it is. But where I come from, I was raised to believe that if you don’t work and try hard to reach your goals, they might just stay goals, and never shape into reality. If I’m reaching out to you today, it’s not as a teenager but as a student in need. I wasn’t planning to study in Canada at all, perfectly knowing the high fees of university. I went there with nothing but dreams, with the hope that one day, with hard work, I’d be able to shape them into concrete plans.
WHAT I DID
That is why I worked day and night on a project for the regional science fair of Ontario that treats about the ways to make Mars amenable for the growth of plants. After a year of research, I built a computer simulation of the environment of Mars and tried to virtually simulate the growth of wheat. I had the chance to bring it to the Canada Wide Science Fair 2019 after my project got evaluated Best of Fair in May. As it turned out, I won a golden ticket to participate in the entrepreneurship boot camp at the University of York, as well as contacts with scientists at the Canadian Space Agency who are willing to collaborate with me on my project. I naturally thought, after looking into the Space engineering program of York, that it was what I wanted to do. Since as far as I can remember, I have always dreamt of becoming an Astronaut, and as I was growing up, that dream never left. But I need your help to make a childhood dream become an adulthood mission.
MY PLANS
Indeed, beyond the fact that signing up late is challenging, I am having financial issues as well. The fees add up to a 40.000 $CAD a year, which is way beyond reach for me and my family. In January my mother quit her job to resume educations and trainings and make one of her dreams comes true. I fully support her choice and I always will. I am very proud of her... But it's way too late for me to apply this year, and I am stuck in between continents.
Recently though, another opportunity opened after the German Space agency's scientists heard about my project, and solicited my participation in the space engineering program at the University of Bremen. It's less expensive, but it's still way beyond reach... They are talking about 15 000 euros (around 23 000 CAD$) and since I can't work abroad, I need support for that as well.
My third and less expensive option would be to study at the University of Mons in Belgium for a year while applying for bursaries and scholarships to try and switch to either Bremen or York in 2020. Doing that would cost around 650 euros (980 $CAD) for the application and around 6000 euros (for a total of around 10 000$CAD) for the residence, tuition, and books.
These are the three plans for my studies, and I will work hard to be able to follow any of these plans. But the issue is that bursaries and scholarships barely cover the cost of these expensive studies, and I can assure you I applied for a maximum amount of them both in Belgium and Canada, with little effect... I cannot impose these too high fees on my parents. I am not the only one starting high school; my brother is also entitled to it!
A REACH FOR HELP
I am willing to work very hard, and I am ready to do whatever it takes to create opportunities. The Space Engineering program of York, as well as the Biological Life Support Systems studies in Bremen or Mons, are exactly what I have been searching for. I will become an astronaut, no matter what it takes. It’s not my dream anymore, it’s my plan.
I just need help. Contacts. Scholarships, bursaries. People that could maybe sponsor me. Or places I could work for. Maybe even professors, looking for students to help them in their research. Maybe even a place to stay. Really, anything could help. I know this might seem crazy, but I can assure you that I am trying my hardest to push locked doors open.

Greetings dear reader, I am Guillaume Gégo, an international student from Belgium. After graduating from high school, I decided to carve my own path by going on a journey to find the thing that would give meaning to my life. My hobbies are as numerous as the stars of the sky, which made any life-related decision very tedious. I play piano, flute, and ukulele; program in C#, C++, Python, and Swift; I am fluent in French, English, and Dutch; and as you can tell, very modest. I read a lot of documentation about space and I even have plans on becoming an astronaut! To do so, I need scholarships and bursaries to come and study in Canada. That’s where the inspiration for my Science Fair project came: it was my dream and my passion. I believe that it has a lot of potential, and I would like to continue working on it on the side as I have been doing for the past year and a half. The only advice I could give to anyone reading this would be: “Don’t wait for the apple to fall off the tree to get started on something you like”.

Once that feat is accomplished, plants will have a critical role in the survival of the newborn colony, leading to a bigger challenge: How can we possibly grow plants on Mars? Could we potentially create a simulation to anticipate the results?
