Hello! As some of you may already know, I am currently in the process of getting new hearing aids. I got my first pair just before my 16th birthday, nearly 5 years ago. My hearing loss is a progressive bilateral severe loss... which means, I have two hearing aids and there is a chance that it may get worse. Most people associate hearing loss with old age, which definitely is not the case at my ripe age of 21.
I "lost" my hearing between the 8th grade and just before my junior year in high school. I had always thought I had poor hearing and everyone else just thought I didn't listen... When I went in for a hearing test, the results were shocking. I realized that I had accommodated myself to learning how to read lips, and boy did I do it well!
The audiologist that is working with me to get new hearing aids gave me the opportunity to try out a new pair with the latest technology to see how I liked them, and all I can say is WOW! I have been a swim instructor for 7 years and I had no idea that water was so LOUD! It has been 4 days and I am still discovering new sounds that I have never heard. My conversations in person and over the phone have been so much better.
I am very ready to take this step in a direction where my hearing loss will no longer make an impact with my jobs and schooling. I will never hear as well as the "hearing world" does, but this is so much closer than I have ever been. As a dance major, I am excited to go back for my final year of college and to hear music in a whole new way that is beyond just feeling it.
Hearing aids are expensive! With or without health insurance, there is not too much help. I decided to start this page to see if anyone has an extra $0.50 or $5.00 to spare to help me on my journey. Anything and everything helps, my ears and I will appreciate it more than you will ever know.
