Dance Fund Honoring Marie Cartmell

My Grandma was passionate about dancing; she loved to teach dance and she loved to dance! During her incredible life she was selected as one of the first 20 dance instructors hand-picked by Arthur Murray to open his dance schools in the USA and the UK. In that role she was able to meet Chubby Checker and bring The Twist to England against the wishes of the London Dance Institute! Grandma is quoted in 1962 in USA newspapers saying, “If you are a sexy person your dance will come out sexy, but I suppose so will the Tango”. That was her argument to allow the twist into England which had been dubbed as too sexy! Grandma also taught dance to 1000’s every Tuesday night on Radio Luxemburg, her show was called “Dancing Party ”. She also authored “Dances for Mods & Rockers ”
