17yo Ethan needs an Assistance Dog following a C4 spinal cord injury. He is now a Tetraplegic…
Ethan Hassett is 17 years old. After a serious quad bike accident in December 2016, he sustained a traumatic neck and C4 spinal cord injury. More than 7 months on, he is still in hospital in Brisbane for rehabilitation where he is learning to live with tetraplegia. Ethan doesn’t know when he will be able to return home to Mackay.
Due to his injury, he needs a power wheelchair to get around and requires a lot of help from those around him. A lot of the things Ethan now struggles with, he can overcome with the help of a properly trained Assistance Dog – but they take 2 years to train and are very expensive.
After months of discussions with Di from K9 Tales, an opportunity has arisen where an assistance dog is available for Ethan. This is where Pip comes in.
Pip will help Ethan retain his independence, confidence and safety. She will help him with daily tasks such as; going to appointments, getting out and about and seeing his family and friends.
This is why he needs your help! Your donation will contribute towards Ethan with this life changing opportunity, by helping with the costs associated with an assistance dog, such as;
- Purchasing a purebred Labrador.
- An authorised* trainer.
- Vet and food bills.
- Travel to Mackay for individualised training and home assessment.
- Bedding.
- Toys.
The road to recovery will be long. Ethan is the type of kid who would and did help anyone. Now it’s your turn to help him.

* Ethan’s Assistant Dog will be trained at K9 Tales – an approved Government Training Institution under the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dog Act 2009. Trainer(s) have National Dog Training and Behaviour Modification (NDTF) Certificate, Government approval under the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dog Act 2009 and Bachelor of Applied Science.
What is an assistance dog?
Assistance Dogs help people with disabilities and give them freedom and independence. They assist their clients with tasks they would otherwise have difficulty in completing. For Ethan, his assistance dog Pip will also keep him company and give an extra level of security to allow him to enjoy life and all it has to offer.
Not all dogs can become an Assistance Dog, as the Dog receives a rigorous training and assessment process, to confirm their temperament and required skill level.
Why is an Assistance Dog so important?
Assistance Dogs give their clients the confidence to get out and about, and improve their self-esteem. Assistance Dogs also give emotional support as well as physical service to their ‘team mate’. They bring independence, freedom, confidence, happiness and hope.
Why so expensive?
Assistance Dogs take 2 years to train and the cost covers all expenses such as vet visits, food, bedding, toys, travel for in-home-training in Mackay, trainer costs etc.
The assistance dog puppies commence training at 8 weeks old – where socialising and education of the dog begins. Throughout the training period the puppies learn the skills needed to be an assistance dog like going to the shops, managing crowds, crossing the road, protecting their client. Additionally, the assistance dog will learn to provide assistance for daily living of the client they work with, including; picking up dropped items, opening and closing doors, pressing the button at traffic lights and alert barking when their client is in trouble.
