Get Rachael to the Ozarks!

I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music. - George Eliot

About me
My name is Rachael Hibbs, a young soprano and soon-to-be-graduate of the School of Music at Baylor University in Waco, TX. My time at Baylor has given me much experience as a performer. I have participated in half a dozen large-scale opera productions, with major roles in four of those shows.  The exposure from these shows has led other departments in the music school to invite me to be part of their performances as well, performances that range from premiering new works by student  composers to singing with the percussion ensemble as we performed Steve Reich\'s \"Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices, and Organ\" for the composer himself.

My time is not strictly limited to performances at the university. Most recently, I was invited to sing at the annual convention for the Texas Federation of Music Clubs (TFMC). After hearing me in an audition situation - fittingly enough, it was my Opera in the Ozarks audition - the president of TFMC approached me with the opportunity.

I spent last summer at the OperaWorks Advanced Artist program, and during my time there I developed a keen interest in the areas of classical vocal improvisation and finding new and creative ways to approach traditional music. A perfectionist at heart, exploring these less-traveled veins of the musical world have really help me to reach new depths as a artist and I strive to bring the excitement of improvised music into every performance I give.

About the program
Opera in the Ozarks is a two-month-long intensive opera program nestled in the Ozark mountains near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Alumni of the program have performed in major opera houses all over the world! Opera in the Ozarks produces three full-length opera productions (multiple performances performances each) with orchestra, a program of operatic scenes, as well as an educational outreach opera that tours the surrounding area of Northwest Arkansas. This year\'s productions include:

Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart)
Die Fledermaus (Strauss)
Little Women (Adamo)
Outreach Opera: Pirates of Penzance (Gilbert & Sullivan; abridged)

I have been invited to participate in the Studio Artist program at Opera in the Ozarks, the introductory-level program, where I will have the opportunity to sing in the choruses of all three major productions as well as have the possibility of covering the major roles of those productions. In addition, I will be playing a small role in the production of Pirates of Penzance.

This year is an excellent way of \"getting my foot in the door.\" Often singers will return to these programs year after year, gaining more and more respect with the teachers and directors, so that in a year or two they will be considered for the Apprentice Artist program, the upper-level tier of Opera in the Ozarks that closely mimics the professional Young Artist programs of major opera companies. This is a tremendous opportunity for me to start making connections and experiencing a professional opera environment, and why your help is so greatly appreciated.

What I need
The cost of tuition for the Opera in the Ozarks Studio Artist program is $2,500. This includes lodging and meals. They have graciously given me enough scholarship money to cover travel expenses to and from the program, but the tuition is up to me, and this is where you can help! Any amount you can give would be helpful to get me to the Ozarks.

What you get
A donation of any amount will help get me to the Ozarks, but I am offering exclusive perks to those who are willing and able to match any of the donation levels listed on the right of this page. These perks range from CDs of my singing to recording personal song requests! It is the least I can do to show my gratitude for your interest and support of my career.

To donate, click on one of the donation levels to the right, or click the large \"Donate Now\" button above to donate a personalized amount. Donations can be made anonymously by checking the Private: Don\'t display my donation to others box next to the Donate Now button on the donation page.

Hear me in person!
In addition to this campaign, I will be giving benefit recitals of a mix classical secular, classical sacred, and music theater repertoire (and maybe even a few surprises thrown in along the way). The cost is free, and there will be a free-will donation taken during the course of the evening. If you are in the area, I invite you to come and experience my singing first-hand.

Recitals:
May 7, 2011 -- 4:00 PM -- St. Matthew\'s Lutheran Church, Waco, TX
May 21, 2011 -- 7:00 PM -- Hope Lutheran Church, Friendswood, TX

Thank you in advance for your interest and support!
