Gary's Study Abroad- Summer 2018

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Gary Russell and I am 34 years old. I am a proud single father of a very beautiful, loving, selfless and smart 5-year-old girl named Colbie. I am currently a sophomore at Blinn College, where I am studying Criminal Justice (CJ). I will graduate with honors this May with an Associates of Arts (AA) Degree in CJ and an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Law Enforcement.  I am also very fortunate to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society at Blinn.  This summer after graduation, I will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University!

I am a Licensed Peace Officer (Police Officer) and a Licensed Private Investigator in the State of Texas with a total combined experience of about 10 years. I decided to step away from Law Enforcement full-time to become a manager for a small start-up Private Investigative company called Noble Investigations so that I can better allocate and manage the time needed time towards my studies and my daughter.

In January of this year,  Phi Theta Kappa invited me to apply for a once in a lifetime opportunity to study abroad in China for 11 days studying International Diplomacy.  At the time, I knew my life was not fit for studying abroad as a single father and a full-time student while building up a start-up company. Well, just a few weeks ago I found myself engaged in conversation with my CJ Director regarding this opportunity, and I realized at that moment, I wanted to take full advantage of this opportunity to broaden my perspectives and learn about how we interact on all levels with people of a foreign culture.

Last week I was accepted to go to China for 11 days in the summer of 2018 with the International Scholar Laureate program who partners with Phi Theta Kappa.  My studies will include International Relations and Diplomacy, Cross-Cultural Communications, and Contemporary Issues. Throughout my educational adventure, I would like to enhance my understanding of international relations by applying the knowledge and information learned in class to our excursions, and throughout my time in China. I want to diversify myself and become comfortable studying and learning outside of the United States and  I want to be introduced to the norms and culture of China. With my dedication and my newfound knowledge, I will be able to fully appreciate the diversity around me when returning to the United States and use that in my future career goal of becoming a US Marshal.

I am very fortunate that Phi Theta Kappa awarded me a partial scholarship of $3000 to help pay for the program fee. The scholarship does not cover the remaining $449 of the program fee or the round-trip airfare from the United States to China.  So, I would like to ask for your donation. I am seeking to raise $2500 dollars in just eight weeks! Every small or big donation to my GoFundMe account will help support my education. For all who donate to support my future endeavors, you will not be disappointed. I am and will be forever grateful for your contributions.

Thank you for your support and reading my study abroad story.
