Scott's Story

I would like to start by telling you about Kevin "Scott". He is a family man who loves music, the Cubs, Tennessee Volunteers and the Chicago Bears! Let's not forget his wife, Nicole. Scott and Nicole met in 1995 and married less than one year later. Nicole is a 28 year cancer survivor, thanks to the amazing care provided to her and her family from St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Scott and Nicole have spent much of their married life supporting St. Jude's by organizing walks, participating in annual fundraisers and Nicole has been a guest speaker for many of those events. This was a huge source of pride for the both of them. They were so proud to be able to give back...and they continue to do so whenever they can.

Now they need our help. In the spring of 2000 Scott was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. Within six years, the damage progressed to the point of implanting a defibrillator. Fast forward two trying years later, the doctors had to implant a biventricular defibrillator with a third lead to help pump the blood in the lower chamber of the heart. The end of that year, Scott had to give up his job and rely on his wife, Nicole's, secondary income to support their living and new medical expenses. The next two years brought long-standing battles to secure disability benefits. Following Scott's doctor's advice, Scott and Nicole left home, family, friends, and Nicole's career behind. They all had high hopes for a better life in the southwest sun. December 4th, 2010, they packed up all their things and made the long ride to Phoenix, Arizona.

Their hopes were high, but the reality of the matter wasn't what they had expected. Scott found himself in Arizona more ill than he had been since he left Indiana. He was unable to keep food down and lost a significant amount of weight. This resulted in a colon re-sectioning surgery to repair the colon due to diverticulitis. In January 2012, two separate surgeries to reconstruct his feet and toes, as a result of his psoriatic arthritis (which has aggravated him since he was 21). Hopes high again, Scott began getting stronger and began working out with a trainer. They were hopeful that things were improving! His health was stable for several months, however, while continuing to be followed by the care of his cardiac doctor tests showed that the heart was not responding to his current medications. Currently, Scott is in the beginning stages of the eligibility process for heart transplant. The many years of medical expenses has already stressed the family finances and overall well-being. He has battled and they have worked so hard for so long. Scott is counting on the kindness of family, friends, and anyone who is willing to help offset their current and future financial burdens! Any and all donations are needed and appreciated.
