In December, the West High Varsity Baseball Team family received devastating news. Matt Sullivan, one of our third basemen and right-handed pitchers, was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Matt had not been feeling well for a couple of weeks, but he and his family had initially attributed it to the flu. During that time, Matt didn't miss a single day of school or baseball conditioning and even participated in college-prep SAT and ACT tests. As Matt continued to experience unexplained fevers, chest pain and other flu-like symptoms, he went to the doctor to get checked. The results came back on December 18th and he learned that he had been diagnosed with leukemia when his mother and father pulled him from his Pre-Calculus semester final to rush him to a pediatric oncology specialty hospital in Roseville.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow, the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children and teenagers, and treatments result in a good chance for a cure. (ALL) rapidly progresses and creates excessive amounts of immature, cancerous blood cells. Matt was initially diagnosed with a very high count of these cells. Treatments are intense and will continue for him over a course of 3+ years. During the initial 8 months of his treatment, the most intensive phases of chemotherapy, Matt is unable to go to school or play baseball. He is currently on the long path to recovery and participating in Home Hospital study to ensure that he completes his Junior year. Matt is really looking forward to his Senior year - getting back to school, his friends and playing baseball!

The diagnosis of a life-threatening illness like Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukemia not only impacts the patient, it also affects their family members, friends, teachers/coaches and the community. Please join us in sending Matt best wishes and support as he continues his battle with cancer.
