Norma's Story....
The first week of September, 2014, Norma started having severe headaches. She went to the doctor who then sent her to the hospital for a CT scan because her blood pressure was 181/123. The hospital told her they would not do a CT scan and that her blood pressure was high because she was having headaches and sent her home. We called the hospital the next day because she was still having severe headaches, they told us to just keep giving her pain medicine. A day later we took her to another hospital who admitted her and did CT scans and an MRI on her brain. She did have a small cyst but they didn't feel that was causing the pain. She was in the hospital for 4 days and released. The next day she started having problems breathing and walking so she was rushed to the hospital. A chest X-ray was done and they found her lungs were filled with fluid. They admitted her again and after numerous tests they diagnosed her with stage IV Ovarian Cancer.
On September 19th a vat procedure was done to try and drain the fluid from her lungs. The doctors said the drains that are inserted in her would be removed after two days because the fluid would stop. She was in ICU for five days. It took eleven days for the fluid to stop.
The doctors have said this is a very aggressive cancer and therefore Norma started her first chemotherapy on September 24th. They told her she would lose her hair in about 3 weeks, she will be weak and sick. Norma will go through chemo for nine weeks, then have surgery, and then another nine weeks of chemo.
Help us support Norma during this battle. Cancer not only takes your health, it affects your life. Even with health insurance, the average out of pocket expense is estimated at over $800/month for care. Once surgery and other options come into play, this cost will raise drastically. Cancer isn't just a quick battle, it is a lifelong fight. Not only fighting cancer, worrying about the high expenses is not something anyone going through this should have to struggle with. Norma is a single Mom and just turned 49 on July 12th. Depending on how she feels, she may not be able to work which makes these costs that much more difficult.
