Help feed our dogs! Arizona Search Dogs is hoping to provide 2 months of food for our dogs!!!
Our dogs have been deployed to 911, Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike and most recently the mudslide disaster in Washington State.
They are also used locally and statewide to help locate missing persons.
While our dogs work for toys they also LOVE to eat!!! We have great partners helping us provide for our dogs, but being able to purchase an additional 2 months of food gives us a tremendous cushion in caring for our canine partners.
Here's a little about what we do - Arizona Search Dogs is a non-profit that acquires, trains, certifies, and develops canine search specialist teams (dog & handler) to be mobilized with FEMA USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) teams and to utilize these teams to assist state and local jurisdictions in urban and wilderness search and rescue activities.
We handle FEMA certified dogs which are trained to air scent an area (rubble, building collapse, debris,etc) for live or deceased victims. This same air scenting of victims can also be utilized to locate lost individuals in a wilderness setting.
Training to a basic certification level takes an average of 2 to 2.5 years. Trainers/handlers in our group spend approximately 1000 hours each year working towards certification.
Once certification is achieved, constant training and conditioning is necessary to maintain a deployable state of readiness. This is usually 500 hours'per year along with recertification tests every three years. Training is the primary responsibility of each handler with assistance from group members.
