I come humbly writing this.
My family and I moved to Vegas after losing everything in a hurricane in Florida.
We came and began to rent a weekly and saved as much as we could. I started my daycare business out of a Siegel Suites and I’m so thankful for my families that have stood by me and continue to grace my family with their support. I saw a listing for a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home on Facebook by a private “landlord” looking for their first tenants. The same day inquiring, we were invited to tour the home. During the tour, we fell in love and asked if we were able to provide a deposit to secure it, being our toddler was turning 3 just a week away, I was 6 months pregnant, and we were desperately trying to give our kids a home before the holidays. This was November 10th, 2024. We paid a total of $3,150 in the form of money orders: $2,900 for a security deposit and $250 towards whatever our prorated rent would be, just to show how serious we were about this home. We were told we couldn't move in until November 19th, 2024, because they were still moving and getting things handled.
We were provided a virtual lease I was asked to DocuSign on November 16th, 2024.
On November 19th, 2024, we were sent a text about receiving keys if we could send our prorated rent through Apple Pay so the “landlord” could secure a U-Haul. We refused to send through Apple Pay and said the landlord said they could not cash in money orders at their bank. We took $636 out in cash, met up at the home where the landlord was, and exchanged it for keys. After this moment, we began our move-in process. From November 20th to December 1st, we lived in the home happily, feeling blessed. Our children got settled, my business resumed, and I began preparing for the birth of our son in February.
On December 1st, we got a text and call stating the landlord will be leaving town to Georgia, and that she was “going to need the rent Apple Paid to her phone immediately, or late fees and court fees will be added.” We questioned this because paying rent through Apple Pay was not what we were going to do for our own security. We responded saying we will have rent in money orders with whatever fees, but it’ll have to wait until you get back so you can receive them. She didn’t say much and just reminded us that she would be adding fees.
Mind you, I already have a utility under my name for this home. December 4th, 2024: 9:30 am. I have 6 children in daycare, my son's father is asleep, my 14-year-old stepson is on his homeschool, and my toddler was brushing his teeth when the scariest knock on the door stopped us all in our tracks. “It’s the Constable with an order to vacate the premises.” I get my son's father and sit the children down, and we open the door to an officer telling us we have 15 minutes to vacate the premises with an eviction notice for the landlord who had fraudulently rented us this home. All we could do was cry silently. I began to call parents to pick up their children, disturbing their workday. My son's father tried to explain the situation, that we’ve only been here for two weeks in our home, that we run a business and are responsible for all these children, and all the man could tell us was to go to the police station because we’ve been a victim of a crime. We frantically began to think about what we need and could grab in this time, what the children need, our kids need, and why this is happening to us right now. The eviction notice was dated for NOVEMBER 4th, 2024, something this person had knowledge of since October this year. And now my family and I don’t have a home, I don’t have a business which means no income. My parents are without childcare. And this person has taken over $4,000 from my family, almost receiving another $2,500, but God is so good and raised some red flags making us remember rent through Apple Pay was not safe for us. But because this was a Wednesday and my clients pay ahead our income was paused right then and there being I couldnt provide care moving forward. We sat in the driveway with children packed in cars, waiting for parents of our daycare kids. Calling our own mothers who live thousands of miles away on separate ends of the map, not knowing how to aid their own grown children but to say whatever you need we will help—at a complete loss of words to describe the feeling of your floor being pulled from beneath you. No explanation for our own children who just settled into their new rooms. Just stone.
Now we have a case open in hopes that some sort of justice can be served. My family and I are just praying for a miracle to happen. And unfortunately since this was illegal we were never listed as real tenants resulting with the property management not contacting us immediately to be able to retrieve our items and everything of value from our home being stolen in the time between. This was not what our children deserved, what our hard work deserved. We did everything the correct way, we moved by faith, and life keeps going, so now we are actively looking for an apartment and trying to figure out an income. I am 2 months away from birth, & anything at this point would help us get our babies into a home by Christmas. Whether that’s you feeling compelled to donate or you reading this moved you to send us prayers and angels of protection. All is appreciated.
-I have screenshots and receipts if anyone needs to see it.
Thank you and God bless you these holidays.
