Eva’s Story (A Battle with Cancer)

On Monday, October 19th 2020, our family received some terrible and completely unexpected news regarding our only child, Eva Kate LaBonne. After a doctor's visit for a seemingly harmless fever and some pain in her side, she was diagnosed with stage 4 nephroblastoma (Wilms Tumor). Our dinosaur loving kindergartener would soon begin a long and difficult battle with cancer. At 6 years old, Eva is embarking on a journey that no child should ever have to endure.
During our extended stay in the hospital, Eva went through so much and this is just the beginning. She has had a port put into her chest, an incision for a biopsy on her side, numerous throat swabs and nasal swabs, several rounds of chemotherapy, constant beeping and prodding and poking and a nasal tube for nutrients and medication. She also contracted Covid-19 during our stay which has added additional complications to her treatment process. Needless to say, all of this has shaken us to our core.
Eva's mother has left her job so that she can provide the additional care Eva needs and advocate for her to receive the best possible medical treatment. This necessary loss of income, combined with mounting medical bills and the potential need to travel during certain phases of treatment, will undoubtedly create financial uncertainties.
As a family, we are still trying to process and figure out how our new life will look. Sometimes it is very overwhelming, but we know we are not alone. As we begin this journey, we know that we have an army at our side and that is a good feeling. All the support, prayers, well wishes and just “being there” mean the world to us!
