Erika's Touch World Cup Fund

I have been honored with the opportunity to represent the United States in the 2015 Touch World Cup. In April I will travel to Coffs Harbour, Australia to mark the United States’ inaugural appearance in the Women’s Open.

Currently, I am in my 5th and final year playing rugby union for the University of Oregon. Throughout my collegiate rugby experience I have also been named to the 2014 All-American second team and played on the annual conference all-star team since my freshmen year. I owe much of my success to the advantage that a background in touch provided me.

My journey with touch started when I moved to Singapore in 2007 where I immediately made the Singapore American School varsity team as a sophomore. I went on to make the traveling side all three years I lived in Singapore, twice receiving the highest recognition possible for my play in the championship tournament, as well as co-captaining my final year. Some of my fondest memories are with the Pirate Touch Football Club where I had the opportunity to play alongside and against the best touch players in the nation. There, I was scouted to play for the Singaporean National U20’s side, traveling to Australia for their 2010 National Touch League competition, where I got my first taste of higher-level competition.

I was unsure when I would have another chance to play touch at that level until I found the USA national championship touch team in my hometown, of all places. I began playing with the Portland Hunters and traveled with their mixed side to nationals in Orlando for the past two years where we earned gold and silver, respectively. And thank goodness for them, without their training and patience I would not have grown into the competitive player I hope to be in Coffs Harbour this April.

Being invited to play for the United States of America’s first-ever women’s side is an honor and a privilege. I love this sport and to be apart of this pioneering team is incredible. I believe I am helping drive a movement to advance women in sports, to make athletics more accessible for women and girls everywhere.

I would like to give a special thank you to my parents, for without their constant support, I can’t say I would have gotten this far.

As many of you may know, rugby and touch programs are not often well funded. Being a part of the USA Touch team, we must pay an estimated $2,500 out of pocket, which covers Federation of International Touch fees, hotel, travel from airports and fields, meals, as well as the many other various costs that go into hosting an international tournament. This, combined with paying for our own flights, pushes our total out of pocket costs to well over $4,500. Please consider donating to my fund, every dollar is appreciated and helps me reach my goal.

Thank you for your support!
