ERIC’S JOURNEY TO A NEW KIDNEY

Donation protected
A little over 10 years ago Eric was diagnosed with Follicular Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) which creates scarring in sections of the glomeruli (filter), which is the essential part of the kidney that cleans the blood.

In 2013 Eric’s kidneys entered "end stage renal failure" which meant he needed a kidney donor as soon as possible.  He was immediately placed on dialysis and has been on it ever since.  Dialysis is a very difficult treatment that he must do 3 to 4 times a week at a dialysis center.  Each week Eric spends close to 30 hours attached to a machine where his blood cycles through filters just to keep him alive.  This is a permanent part of Eric’s life until he is able to receive a kidney transplant.  The average life expectancy of a person on dialysis is only about 5 years.

Eric is 36 years old, he is diligent about keeping up with his numerous medical appointments however it is not enough to keep him out of the hospital or able to participate in life the way he use to.  However, Eric still fishes once a week and always makes time for his friends and family.  He’s a good friend, he cares about people and somehow always finds a way to laugh and have fun.  He also understands how fragile life is.  He has so much to offer this world and so much to live for which is why I have started this page for him.  Eric needs our help and support so he can prepare for a kidney transplant when a donor is matched for him.  Eric’s blood type is O positive, which he has been told has the longest wait time for deceased donors (approximately 4-6 years).    A significant percentage of potential recipients die while waiting for a kidney.  The greatest gift would be a living kidney donation which would save Eric’s life.

Eric has been proactive in exploring options available to him around the world and is narrowing down what his next steps will be.  I know there is fear knowing that he’s approaching the 5 year mark on dialysis so let’s all come together to help Eric get the best medical interventions and treatment for himself.  With a kidney transplant recovery time is between 4-12 months where he will be unable to work, travel or be around too many people.  Donations will be used for treatments not covered by insurance, anti-rejection medications which are madatory for the rest of his life and will cost around $6,000 per month so his body doesn’t reject the kidney, living expenses for him and the people who care for him after the transplant, and additional medical needs that go along with that procedure. Any donation will be greatly appreciated to help Eric over this hurdle and begin a new chapter in his life.

Transplantliving.org has estimated the total costs per person for a kidney transplant can add up to $262,900!

It is very difficult for Eric to ask friends and family to donate money.  He struggles being in this position because he is usually the one helping and giving to others.

Your donation can help diminish the weight of financial burdens and help Eric focus on a healthy recovery and life. You can make a big difference with a large or small donation.  Thank you for your love and support.
