The Connie Green Preschool, Burundi

The Butanuka Pre-school in Burundi began in February, 2020 when Dr. Connie Green visited Burundi through a grant from the U. S. Department of State. Connie brought materials to use with the children to foster their cognitive, emotional, social, language and motor learning. The children received healthy food and learned about hand washing.
Children in the pre-school live in the impoverished community surrounding the Dreaming for Change feeding center. All the children continue to come to the feeding center for the nutritious porridge served there.
The prototype program ins scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Monday and Wednesday afternoons. The two teachers, Claudine and Jeanette assisted Connie during the initial five days of the program. There is now a college educated consultant, Nadège Kavyinabuhiye, who visits the program regularly and works with children and teachers.
Children in Burundi begin school at age seven. This leaves young children surviving in rudimentary homes and neighborhoods with little cognitive or language stimulation during the early years of development. While many children have advanced gross motor skills from walking, running, climbing, carrying loads, and balancing,, their language, cognitive and fine motor skills would benefit from stimulation to enhance development and learning.
This GoFundMe campaign is to raise funds to build a preschool on the newly acquired land of Dreaming for Change. We are currently serving 27 children in one partially contained room. Our dream is to build first two classrooms and bathrooms, second to complete construction of 4 classrooms, bathrooms, teacher workspace/kitchen.
Building a pre-school for 100 children is a long-term project and commitment. It will involve numerous steps and many donors will be needed. To give you an idea of the cost of the program, we would like to share this break-down of the costs.
1. A donation of $2,000 will pay for the site preparation.
2. A donation of $7,000 will provide for one complete classroom.
3. A donation of $2,200 will pay for the foundation.
4. A donation of $85 will pay for bricks for one classroom.
5. A donation of $2,000 will pay for metal sheets for the roof.
6. A donation of $5,000 will pay for the bathrooms.
7. A donation of $122 will pay for one door.
8. A donation of $800 will pay for the paint for all classrooms.
