Rarely do we get the opportunity to give back to special people who have loved us into being. Sometimes though, life and circumstances surprise us and we are able to say "thank you" in a life-saving way.
I first met my Tia Mari in the delivery room when I was born. She has embraced and loved me as if I were her own. As my madrina (godmother), she is the glue to our family and she brings a beautiful spirit of generosity, joy, and unconditional love to each person who has the privilege of knowing her.
Unfortunately, my Tia Mari was diagnosed with kidney failure and placed on dialysis a year ago. She receives dialysis 3-4 times a week, with each treatment lasting about 4 hours.
After many medical tests, I received the good news that I was a match to be a kidney donor for my Tia Mari. The kidney donation will take place on August 1, 2017 in Utah.
Thankfully, many of the medical expenses associated with the donation will be covered by our insurance. However, both of us will be incurring expenses that will not be covered. I will be taking a 4 week leave of absence from work and receiving a reduced pay during those weeks. I will also be incurring travel expenses from Boston to Utah.
My Tia Mari has health insurance, but all of the costs of the surgery will be very expensive for her, on top of already paying for weekly dialysis appointments for the past year.
Many of you have asked how you can help. I'm reaching out to you to ask if you can give what you can to help with the costs related to the kidney donation.
Any amount you are able to donate would make a big difference to us both. My Tia Mari and I thank you immensly for all your support and love.
