The Journey of Doc, the Kill Pen Belgian

Donation protected
Y’all, Kristie and I did a thing... something that we felt compelled and passionate to do. We rescued this guy from a horse kill pen in Kansas; it's a place that sells horses to be slaughtered for consumption. Sadly, the more we dive into this world, the more messed up we learn it is. BUT the good news is this guy will not be slaughtered in Mexico!

If you’ve made it this far, thank you, and if you make it to the end of this story and educate yourself on this matter, even better!

Meet Doc, a 20ish-year-old Belgian Draft horse that was at the Peabody kill pen lot in Kansas. We stumbled across him on Facebook and started following his story. He was supposed to have shipped to a slaughterhouse on Sunday, January 3. Doc was about to be loaded on the slaughter truck when we panicked and paid his bail (as they say) because NO one else came forward to save him. His eyes just spoke to us, his sweet demeanor in the video grabbed us, and we knew he was special. The quick and dirty as to why he ended up at a kill pen; essentially, he was dumped at an auction, bought by a kill buyer, and was sold to a slaughterhouse in Mexico for human meat consumption. Well, we messaged the lot, posted his bail, organized a rescue to pick him up, sent him into quarantine (join the club buddy), and worked with the horse rescue to scheduled a vet to get him back to health. Our game plan for this gentle giant is to have him shipped to us and live the rest of his time in a pasture on our ranch in California just being LOVED. If not, we will work with the rescue in Kansas to place him in a retirement pasture.

This is where I invite you to join our journey. He’s going to require a bit of TLC. He’s currently underweight, he has a bad abscess on his shoulder, needs his feet trimmed and his eye removed. BUT his heart is ready to receive all the love he's supposed to have! His Instagram is @docthebelgain and we’ll post updates as we go. If you feel compelled to donate towards his rehab, care, and extra carrots, please do so here. But at the least, give this link a share and join us on his "glow-up" for some positivity in 2021!

Any additional donations above what Doc needs will go back to the rescues so they can save more kill pen horses.
