We appreciate all the care, concern, prayer, support and encouragement that we have received from our family and friends; in regards to Cory’s health needs.
Cory has a number of health problems, but our primary concern is her gastro-intestinal tract. About 5 years ago she was diagnosed with achalasia, an incurable progressive disease of the esophagus. The nerve for the sphincter muscle that connects the esophagus to the stomach no longer works, so it’s always shut – letting no food through. A few weeks just before the operation liquids stopped getting thru, so she was on IV treatments.
Cory had an operation 4 years ago, a work around that involves cutting the muscle; so it no longer fully shuts. Though on a restricted diet, she was able to eat enough to meet her nutritional needs. However, this recently stopped working. Currently she is getting some liquids, in the form of a slow leak between the esophagus and stomach.
Typically this surgery has a longer effective life – one of the reasons we went with it. This came on suddenly, so we are seeking medical help to confirm her condition and explore her options.
We also applied for Medicaid, since my part-time work doesn’t supply enough for insurance.
Our initial expenses include liquid nutritional supplements, doctor and specialists’ visits, and a day in the hospital for an endoscopy; which will allow the doctor to see what is going on in the esophagus, the surgery work around, and the stomach.
We are also looking into getting health insurance to reduce overall costs.
We expect these initial expenses to cost us $5,000, but we don’t know what the hospital charges for procedures.
We reasonably expect to be approved for Medicaid and have less need for financial assistance with the following phases of this journey.
