My name is Bonnie Southard. I want to tell you about our neighbor. Charles Sours. He has been married to his high school sweetheart Cindy for twenty one years. They have two very polite, respectful young boys Jacob, 15 and Travis who is 13.
Charles is a highly respected and decorated Deputy Sheriff of Page County, Virginia.
He joined the Sheriffs department because he believed in a free society, wanted to promote community safety and uphold the rule of Law. He is an exceptional man.
Charles was diagnosed in 2010 with Liposarcoma. It is a rare type of cancer that develops in his fatty tissue. The cancer can grow anywhere in his body. His started in his right inner thigh. In the last 10 years it has spread to his spine, right rib, incased 50% of is right lung and has now moved to his Liver.
He has been in and out of hospitals, had several surgeries and has received chemotherapy treatments off and on since he was diagnoised. He has fought and fought but at this point all Treatment options have been exhausted. The hope now to see his boys grow up and spend time with his beloved Cindy, is to go to Texas for Experimental Clinical Trials. He has an opportunity with the distinguished MD Anderson Cancer Research Center to do just that.
Some insurance companies may not pay for cancer treatments that they consider experimental, (like treatments done as part of clinical trial’s) Patients who are lucky enough to be accepted face additional costs of travel, lodging, meals and other living expenses when the trial is not in thier home area. This is the delimma Charles finds himself in.
Cancer has been an expensive long term challenge not only for him but for the whole family. Cindy works two jobs and 15 year old Jacob works on a local Farm to help with expenses.
He’s put his life on the line for us, now lets help him when he needs us the most.
