Amanda Marshall is my friend and coworker at Accawmacke Elementary School on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She is a Reading Specialist who works with children in kindergarten through fifth grade. She is the type of person we should all strive to be.
Amanda is known for being soft-spoken, kind, and compassionate. A more loving soul you will never meet...
And she has just been told that she has Stage 2 Breast Cancer.
She has spent the last two years standing by her husband, Steven, as he battled colon cancer. He had three surgeries, followed by an infection that almost killed him. This past December, Steven underwent a small bowel/large intestine/colon transplant at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. After many weeks in the hospital, he is now at a Manor Care Rehabilitation Center in the D.C. area where he will remain for at least another four weeks. This is three and a half hours away from their home and Amanda's workplace. She and her four-year-old daughter, Hannah, make this drive as often as they can while she continues to try to avoid missing work.
Amanda will start chemotherapy soon to shrink the tumors and will then have surgery to remove them. This will certainly result in time away from her job. Amanda's sick days have been used up during her husband's battle with cancer. She will have access to a sick leave bank, but only after she has missed 15 consecutive days. This means lost wages. She must now begin her own battle with cancer, but with fewer resources.
This GoFundMe page has been created to help ease the burden for Amanda and Steven. The next days, weeks, and months hold countless doctor appointments, hospital stays, and surgery. As you can imagine, the costs for travel, medical bills, and lost wages will be enormous. This GoFundMe collection will enable Amanda to focus on her treatment, her family, and getting better.
