Hi ya Lovelies!
Meet Bun Bun! He is our rescue rabbit and the absolute *light of our lives* :)
My husband & I found Bun Bun on the side of the road within an inch of his life near a defunct petting zoo. We bought him home with the understanding that sadly he may pass on during the night as he was in pretty bad shape. He had been attacked and had bites over his stomach and hind legs (bites in his ears and his nose from previous attacks) and was very skeletal from the neglect he had received at Uncle Stu's Petting Zoo.
To our *delight*:Bun Bun pulled through and he has now been a part of our family for 2 *magical* years and we couldn't imagine life without him! :D

On February 10th poor Bun Bun became very sick and stopped eating, peeing and pooping completely (NOTE: Bunnies need to graze constantly so if you notice they haven't eaten within 4-6 hours you NEED to get them to a vet IMMEDIATELY as there is something very wrong and it will be fatal if not attended to)
It was 9pm in the evening when I noticed Bun Bun was very unwell and we had no way of getting him to a vet as sadly my husband & I don't have a car :(
I slept beside him and was monitoring him throughout the night.
In desperation I rang a neighbor early the next morning to see if they could help us get bunny to the vet and thankfully they answered the call!
It was 9am by the time he was seen and the vet gave him a 10-15% chance of being able to pull through (they offered to swing by our apartment to euthanize him later as it was on his way home). The only other option, he said, was to take him out to Exotic Animal Center in Pasadena and see Dr Kanfer who is a specialist in Rabbits. Again, he stressed that euthanizing Buns would "be the cheaper route," as the vet said, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to give up on Bun Bun like that. Buns is too *magical* and the world needs him in it, even if there was only a small chance!

Bun Bun was admitted to the vet hospital in critical care for 8 days and had to undergo a tremendous amount of "˜Support work' just to keep his wee system going and to keep him alive *sniff*
The doctors couldn't figure out what on earth had even made him sick and said our wee bun was a very unique case! They ran all kinds of tests from multiple x rays, blood work, urine tests and all the results came up like there was nothing wrong:but clearly there was something very wrong:.so much so, the incredibly lovely Dr Sari Kanfer was taking him home every evening with her to nurse him and take extra loving care of him. You try find any other doctor that will do that for your pet!

I visited Buns at the hospital each day that he was there, with my husband coming down as well when he could on Saturday. The hospital was very accommodating and would let us visit for hours on end sometimes. We could tell this had a very positive impact on Bun Bun as he would perk up while we were there. We wanted him to know we hadn't given up and that he shouldn't either. Since we don't have a car this meant a three hour each way commute, which was completely worth it.

After the 8 days Bun Bun was given the okay to come home to our delight (it just didn't feel like a home without him):we were then given the medical bill and I almost went into cardiac arrest! The bill came to $3,800 but thankfully the very kind doctors were willing to work with us and knocked the bill down to $3000.
When Buns was home he had to have around-the-clock care from morning to midnight.
He received around ten injections per day (four different medications) - some injections were two to three times daily.
He had three different Oral medications twice per day, which he hated (the doctors even said he's the most willful rabbit they've ever met!), and was receiving up to x100 3cc syringe feedings of critical care, Hepato Support and water per day through a feeding tube in his nose, which had been sewn onto his nostril.
Buns had to have this round-the-clock care for approximately 10 days which was exhausting as I was the sole person administering them (at the vet, the work load was shared between nurses).
During the next two months, Bun Bun sadly relapsed a few times and had to be rushed back to see the doctor for more examinations and medications (five visits to be exact).
After two very long and emotionally crippling months, Bun Bun is finally starting to heal and become his lovely self again:he is still not 100% out of the woods & I still need to be home with him monitoring his eating and bathroom regularity which makes it tricky for me to be able to look for employment to pay for his medical bills (I was laid off from my job just before Christmas at the end of last year along with half the staff at the company I was with). My husband works but we are far from well off, and this truly hit us at a bad time.
But now he's home, he's healthy, he's happy--he's BUNNY 2.0!

The bills have piled up beyond anything we could have imagined and my husband & I had to apply for and use vet-approved compounded interest credit cards to pay Bun Bun's Medical Bills (it was the ONLY way to save him) and sadly we don't have a prayer of being able to pay these off within the time period they give you *sniff*
These bills are creating an incredible amount of stress for us as we just can't keep up with the payments (I have been trying to sell my clothes desperately on eBay to try meet the monthly payments:but its just not enough)
(Buns is NOT stressed, which is how it should be!)

-Feb 22nd - $256 - Medical Exam, Nasogastric tube, and more Medications (Amikacin, Critical Care, Hepato Support, Bethanechol, Cyproheptadine, Torbutrol, Syringes, Needles)
-Mar 1st - $57 - Medical exam (check up to see how he was doing)
-Mar 3rd - $92.31 - More Medication (Reglan, Cyproheptadine, Torbutrol and needles)
-Mar 23rd - $186.96 - Medical exam and More Medications (Baytril, Hydromorphone, Midazolam, Syringes, Needles)
-$300 in hiring Zip Cars to get Bun Bun back and forth to his appointments when our neighbor was not available :)
