Brooke’s Battle with Cancer

Brooke’s battle began in 2001 when she was first diagnosed with a rare aggressive Desmoid tumor. Since then, Brooke has endured massive proton beam radiation, many rounds of chemotherapy, clinical trials of several drugs, and major reconstructive surgery (7 in all) of her spine and a neck fusion. In December 2014, Brooke underwent two different surgeries to remove the Desmoid tumor. Unfortunately, the tumor she had removed was not her Desmoid tumor, rather a rare cancer which was caused from the radiation treatment she received.
This cancer (Sarcoma) has plagued Brooke and continues to reap havoc in the Fisher family household. After surgical removal of the tumor recurrence in February 2017 and chemotherapy treatments in the months following, Brooke’s cancer continued to grow. In April, Brooke spent approximately a month fighting off a significant pneumonia, at a time when she had no immune system following one of her chemotherapy treatments. On July 1, 2017 Brooke began to lose her neurological functioning due to the tumor compressing her spinal cord. As a result, Brooke is now a paraplegic.
After a month long stay away from her family, Brooke came home last week to continue to live at home with her husband (Jeffrey) and son (Harrison). The Fisher family is currently undergoing another transition to adjust to this new norm. Now that Brooke is home, their family is incurring a large number of expenses such as wheelchairs, chairlifts, ramps, and private duty nursing to name a few. Since Brooke is unable to work due to her illness, Jeff is their primary source of income. FMLA is both unpaid and not perpetual, therefore their family is losing their most significant source of income.
