What do we do and why do we need your support?

The British Women’s Gliding Team are looking forward to representing our country in the Women’s World Gliding Championship 2019, which will take place in Lake Keepit, Australia.

With your help we can get the British Gliding team and our support crew out to Australia, to compete and bring back the medals!

Just as the British Women’s rugby, cricket and hockey teams did for their sports, so we want to give women in gliding a bigger profile, and get more women involved in the sport. At the moment only about 6% of glider pilots are women. We want to change that.

We were successful in bidding for the 2021 Women’s Worlds, which will now be held in the UK and will raise the profile of the sport, and the UK, internationally. So, we want to be there defending our Australian gold medals!

Your help can make that a reality.

The team would be grateful of even the smallest amount, whether you are an individual or a company.

– If you are a glider pilot and want to pledge an amount for a cross-country coaching day with one of us, please scroll down to see the link. –

Because we want you all to feel part of the team too, you will receive a heartfelt thank you from us:

• We are founder members of Women Glide UK, an initiative to encourage more women into the sport
• We launched the British Gliding Association’s Women Project
• We managed the UK’s successful bid for the 2021 Women’s Worlds, which will be held in the UK and will raise the profile of the sport and the UK internationally
• We volunteer as instructors and cross-country coaches in our respective home clubs on a weekly basis
• We work in various other voluntary roles in UK gliding

Who are we?

Liz Sparrow, former top ranked woman in world gliding, competing in the 18m Class
Ayala Truelove, twice silver medallist at Women’s World Championships, flying in the Standard Class
Claudia Hill, current top ranked woman in UK gliding, competing in the Club Class alongside
Max Kirschner, our Team Captain. The team captain doesn’t fly, but is a vital member of the team as he looks after the logistics and liaises with the organisers and the other team captains

Ernest, who successfully bid for a cross-country coaching day with British Team member G Dale, allowed us to share his impressions of their flight together a few weeks back. Sounds like he enjoyed it!

Over to Ernest:
Having won an auction in support of the British Women’s Gliding team, I chose to have a day of cross-country coaching with the legendary G Dale.

Today is the day!

Despite a very average forecast and airspace restrictions due to Trump’s visit and Royal flights, we got ready for a triangular task of Lasham, Andover, Oxford and return to Lasham and planned our departure around noon.

You should note, in the first hour, I have already learned more from G about planning, weather forecasting, glider preparation and advanced instrumentation than I would expect from a very intensive day in the classroom.

With me in the back seat and G at the controls, we took an aero tow to about 2000’ and released in moderate lift. We flew towards Basingstoke with clear views over Odiham, my old school, Lord Wandsworth College at Long Sutton and Farnborough.
With sufficient height we crossed our start line and routed down the M3 towards Popham.
G handed the ‘beast’ to me to fly. I’ve never flown from the back seat before, never flown a flapped glider, never flown an Ash 25, so I’m on a steep learning curve but loving it. With G’s coaching I centred in a couple of thermals using the amazing vario to help keep me connected.

We reached the turning point at Andover and tracked towards Oxford turning off track to use the best lift we could find. I found the wing flexing in the Ash amazing and distracting at the same time.
We flew over many landmarks including the old Didcot power station, the Cyclotron at Harwell and noted several potential outlanding fields and airfields.
We found a good climb just before our turning point at historic Oxford so turned with 4000 feet on the clock - not enough to see us home but comforting.
We had to scratch around a bit to get our height for the final glide but, with Lasham in sight, the computers told us we were good to go so we went!

On the ground after a flight of 1:48, we had flown 160 km at an average speed of 100kph, I now really have an appreciation of what cross country flying is all about and I’m totally inspired to do more.

Finally I got signed off on bug removal and tucking the “beast” away for the night.

Thanks to the British Gliding Team for making this possible and to G for making it happen.
