Too many children, especially disadvantaged students, lose literacy skills over the summer due to a lack of recreational reading material. This summer slide is devastating for student progress. Research shows that reading is the most influential factor related to summer learning. Through our partnerships, BookEnds places books into the hands of thousands of children and helps students to maintain or increase their reading achievement over the summer months. We have partnerships with local schools and summer school programs, providing classroom and home-based libraries, and we work with organizations like Summer Night Lights – a mayor supported project where BookEnds books are placed into 32 parks with summer literacy programs.
EXTENDED DEADLINE! Please help us raise $15,000 by July 31th 2014 to place thousands of books into the hands of kids who otherwise have no access to literacy resources. Don't let these kids become part of the huge numbers of students who fall behind over the summer and start the new school year behind their classmates.
All year long, BookEnds works with student volunteers to organize book drives in their schools to recycle their gently-used books directly into the hands of kids in schools and youth organizations in desperate need of books.
Only 49% of LAUSD students are proficient in English Language Arts. Your donation can halt the cycle of illiteracy and the poverty that inevitably ensues when students cannot read. And, at the same time, you'll be supporting a vibrant volunteer youth movement that measurably changes the future for Los Angeles students who need it most!
Every $10 donated results in $50 worth of books for students.
