"Black Girls (Can) Fly!" is an award-winning play written and directed by Sydney Chatman. Ms. Chatman is a 15 year theater teacher from Chicago. She wrote this play to address the systemic violence against Black women, young ladies, and girls.

How do we tell Black girls that they are beautiful, smart, and worthy of pursing their dreams when they live in a world that is set up against them? On the heels of sold-out runs with MPAACT Theatre’s Summer Jams at the Chicago’s Greenhouse Theater Center, playwright and director Sydney Chatman presents her inspirational production, Black Girls (Can) Fly! Inspired by Black Chicago-based pioneers, NASA’s Dr. Mae Jemison and Aviator Elizabeth “Bessie” Coleman, Chatman’s production follows 10 year-old, Bessie Mae whose fear of the world outside her front door prevents her from pursuing her dreams. Silenced by senseless killings and the disrespect towards Black women in her Chicago neighborhood, Bessie Mae feels helpless. But through the encouragement of her grandmother and the neighborhood “Fly Girls,” she overcomes by using her voice as a catalyst for change and social empowerment.

I have spent my own funds for the past two years in making this play a reality. The play has garnered three sold-out productions along with a Special Recognition award from The African-American Arts Alliance of Chicago. To see the confidence and growth the #FLYGIRLS have realized within themselves makes it all worth it.

I have never asked anyone to financially support my vision until now. I am leaning on the kindness and generosity of my community to assist in making the experience for these worthy #FlyGirls from all across the city, a reality.

The production has accrued some unexpected expenses as we prepare to participate at the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival.

The funds will be used to purchase the following:

1. Travel, lodging, food, van rental
2. UHaul rental
3. Costumes, Props, and Set

It would mean a lot to be able to share a postive image of Black girls along the parade route. We would appreciate your support in sharing this campaign and donating.
