Did you know most health care plans explicitly exclude coverage for transgender health care procedures?
They do - and that's in spite of the fact that most health care professionals agree that gender-confirming treatment is medically necessary for transgender people.
The cost of denying care is great - depression, addiction and suicide rates are all alarmingly high among transgender people. In a 2011 survey by the National Center for Transgender Equality , 41% of the transgender people surveyed reported having attempted suicide.
What is This:
Hi, my name is Beck, and On December 12th, I will be having my own gender-confirming "top surgery."
In the days leading up to my surgery I am running a challenge to raise $10,000 for the Jim Collins Foundation which provides financial support for transgender folks seeking gender-confirming surgeries - $10 at a time.
30 Days
1000 people
$10 each
Why Now?
The good news for me is that I am extremely privileged to have insurance coverage that includes gender-confirming surgery. Also, I am able to afford my co-pays and travel expenses. Most transgender people don't have these resources.
2 primary goals:
- raise $10,000 for the Jim Collins Foundation
- increase awareness of transgender health care issues
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Here's your call to action - to help, please:
1) Donate $10 (or whatever you can)
2) Ask 10 friends to donate $10
3) Share this site on your social media
About The Jim Collins Foundation:
The Jim Collins Foundation raises money to fund gender-confirming surgeries for those transgender people who need surgery to live a healthy life, but have no ability to pay for it themselves. We recognize that for those people who require surgery for a healthy gender transition, lack of access to surgery may result in hopelessness, depression, and sometimes, suicide. The Jim Collins Foundation is a community-based initiative promoting the self-determination and empowerment of all transgender people.
All donations go directly to the Jim Collins Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.
