On June 8, 2014, Ashley was at home when she had her first seizure after having ONE hit of "Kush", cynthetic marijuana.Her younger siblings, who has never witnessed a seizure, got scared and called 911. The ambulance crew arrived and transported her to the Methodist St. John's ER, where advanced care was given. Later, she was admitted and sent to ICU. She was diagnosed with an anoxic brain injury and cerebral edema. Ashley was later transported by Hermann Life Flight to Methodist Hospital Neuro ICU, where she is currently being treated.
Ashley's mom, Anna, has been her rock and has not left her side since this horrific event occurred. She has put her life on hold for Ashley, being she is the oldest of 10.
Anna and Travis (step dad) has served the Galveston City and County throughout the years. They have saved many lives, made people laugh, held someone's hand and hugged someone when they needed it. They have made a difference in many lives. We like to show them that their dedication has not been overlooked.
Co-workers from Galveston Area Ambulance Authority (GEMS) working along the side with employees and volunteers from Galveston Fire Department, Galveston Police Department, Hitchcock Fire Department, City of South Houston EMS, Bacliff Volunteer Fire Department and San Leon Volunteer Fire Department have organized a fundraiser to help our fellow brother and sister.
For Friends and family, you can donate your money here without being in the state of Texas. The funds will go directly to the Ashley Aina Challenge Fund to help with all medical costs and expenses.
