Amy St. John's Road to Recovery

As the 2021-22 hockey season begins to wind down, and with our 53rd annual Easter tournament fast approaching, we are asking for your help with a Brampton Canadettes family in need.  Amy St-John, a 12-year-old goalie playing on one of our U15 House League teams was walking to school on December 16, 2021, when she was struck and dragged by a school bus.   Paramedics rushed Amy by ambulance to Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital only to discover that she needed to be transferred to St. Mikes Hospital due to the extent of the trauma.  Here, it was determined that Amy had suffered a crushing injury to the back of her pelvis, as well as significant nerve damage to her left leg, and she was taken for reconstructive surgery.

Amy is one of five children to Mom Joelle, who, as her primary caregiver, has been unable to work since the accident occurred.  This has led to significant financial strain.  When you factor in the extent of physiotherapy and occupational therapy that Amy will require for a great length of time, we are looking to our teams and the extended hockey community for assistance.  The Brampton Canadettes Board of Executives is managing this fundraiser, in conjunction with a silent auction at our Easter Tournament, with all proceeds being donated to Amy’s family to hopefully ease the financial burden.

Amy has shown incredible strength and toughness as she recovers, but is currently only able to move with the help of a walker and is not able to do anything without assistance.  The prognosis for her recovery is unclear at this time, and more surgeries may be required in the future.  It is currently unknown if she will return to 100% of where she was prior to the accident.
